Since its establishment in 1876 as the Iowa State Normal School, the University of Northern Iowa has maintained its affirmed commitment to the support of excellence in teacher education. This commitment was recognized by the Iowa General Assembly in 1967 when the function of the university was redefined to include as its primary responsibility the preparation of " . . . teachers and other educational personnel for schools, colleges, and universities . . ."
