About Critical Media

The Critical Media project was produced in Spring, 2006 by an Interactive Media Studies capstone class led by Bettina Fabos, Ph.D., who teaches in Interactive Media Studies and Journalism at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Twenty students from various disciplines (Mass Communication, Graphic Design, Journalism, Interdisciplinary Studies, Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Finance) created this project over a four-month period. Building on all of our expertise in our various areas, doing additional in-depth research, and using contemporary digital technologies, we have attempted to use the everyday tools and content of mass media to critically comment on the mass media. ). Dr. Christopher Martin and Dr. Richard Campbell acted as consulting producers. Other Miami University faculty and staff contributing to the project are as follows: Dr. Ron Scott, Dr. Ron Becker, Ed Arnone, Cheryl Gibbs, John Fink, Bob Long, Steve Beitzel, Glenn Simmons, Craig Rouse, and Dan Spencer.

It is our hope that this project will encourage students to become more critical consumers of all media messages and more knowledgeable about the political and economic circumstances in which our commercial media system operates. We also hope that these critical media documentary shorts will inspire other students to be more than just consumers, and to use our work as a model to actively critique the mass media.
