The State Library's State Data Center, in cooperation with the Iowa Commission on the Status of African Americans, has produced a demographic profile of Iowa's African American population for Black History Month. The 4-page profile is on the State Data Center's website, which is www.iowadatacenter.org/additionalinfo/publications.html. As many of you know, Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) established Negro History Week on February 12, 1926, to pay tribute to the contributions to our nation by people of African descent. The date was selected to honor both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, as part of the nation's bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month.
This year marks the eightieth anniversary of Negro History Week and the thirtieth anniversary of Black History Month. The theme of this year's celebration, as put forth by Woodson's Association for the Study of African American Life and History, is: "Celebrating Community: A Tribute to Black Fraternal, Social, and Civic Institutions."
