Evan O’Leary, Graduate Student at Iowa State University presents Electronic Structure of Rare-earth Diantimonide LaSb2. Experimental investigation of electronic structure is essential to our theoretical understanding of how macroscopic properties arise due to quantum interactions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is one method used to study the electronic structure of materials. Hear a brief overview of ARPES and discuss the electronic structure of the rare-earth diantimonide LaSb2. Rare-earth diantimonides exhibit many interesting properties such as super-conductivity, charge density wave ordering, and different magnetic phases. The compound LaSb2 is the only member of this family found to be non-magnetic. However, it does undergo a charge density wave ordering at TCDW = 355 K and enters a superconducting state at Tc = 1.2 K. Also presented will be ARPES data above and below TCDW , and a demonstration that there are no apparent changes in the electronic structure due to the CDW ordering.

Saturday, April 27, 2024 - 1:00 pm

The Center for Energy & Environmental Education is proud to host this talk on Water Quality in Iowa by guest Dr. Silvia Secchi, Senior Research Fellow with the Environmental Policy Research Program and Professor in the University of Iowa Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences.

Dr. Silvia Secchi is a natural resource economist by training, and her work typically combines methodologies from the social sciences, the natural sciences and engineering. She has published on the environmental impacts of agricultural land use change in the Corn Belt, particularly water quality and carbon, and the interplay between agricultural, conservation and energy policies in the region. She has also researched farmers’ attitudes towards conservation, multifunctional floodplain management and targeted reconnection, invasive species management, and mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector. Secchi is a core faculty member in the campus-wide Water Sustainability Initiative. She is also interested in the mentoring and training of graduate students, fostering the creation of new knowledge in interdisciplinary teams, and promoting effective science and policy communication, both internally within teams, and externally when engaging with stakeholders, funders and society at large.

Garden of Memories Cemetery is by far the largest cemetery in our local community with more than 4,500 veterans interned there. It is an extensive undertaking to place flags on the grave of each Veteran for Memorial Day.

We are requesting the help of volunteers to place flags on the graves. This mission requires attention to detail, determination and quick adaptive skill sets to finish in a timely manner. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.

Please sign up by emailing chiquita.loveless@uni.edu or yloveless@blackhawkcounty.iowa.gov, or call 319-287-9463 to keep this noble tradition alive.

When:
Thursday, May 23
Two shifts available at 9 a.m. -  noon; and 4-7 p.m.
