The exhibition is a formal presentation of recent accomplishments by the faculty in the UNI Department of Art. It is an opportunity for students and the public at large to experience current themes in contemporary art and also to meet artists who not only teach but also maintain vibrant professional careers in studio art, graphic design, art history, and art education. The opening reception begins at 6 p.m., Mon., Oct. 9, in the KAB South lobby.

Lecture: "Expelling Injustice from Iowa's Schools"

Derrick Darby, Univerity of Michigan, will reflect philosophically on the issue of justice in the Iowa school system in which black students perform below the national average in test scores, have lower scores than white students, are less likely than whites to graduate high school and are four times more likely than white students to be disciplined and removed from class. The lecture is open to the public, free of charge.

Derrick Darby, professor of philosophy at the University of Michigan, will give a public lecture as part of the Philosophy and Religion Hearst Speaker Series. The tile of his talk is "Expelling Injustice from Iowa Schools." Darby is the co-author of the forthcoming  book, "The Color of Mind: Why the Origins of Achievement Gap Matters for Justice."

Guest Artist Recital: WoodWired Duo – Hannah Leffler, flute, and Cheyenne Cruz, bass clarinet

Monday, October 16, 2017 - 7:30 pm

Visiting artists WoodWired Duo, featuring Hanna Leffler, flute, and Cheyenne Cruz, bass clarinet, will present a recital. Leffler, a UNI alum, has held faculty positions at Luther College, the University of Northern Iowa, and the Northeast Iowa School of Music. She performs frequently with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and is a DMA candidate at the University of North Texas. Cruz currently serves on the faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington, previously held a faculty position at Stephen F. Austin State University, and was the Teaching Fellow in chamber music for the University of North Texas in 2015. This event is free and open to the public.
