2016 Hari Shankar Memorial Lecture

The 2016 Hari Shankar Memorial Lecture "It's an Ethnic Thing: Cultural Challenges to Broadening Participation in Mathematics"  by Dr. Philip Kutzko, Professor of Mathematics and CLAS Collegiate Fellow at the University of Iowa. He will present a rethinking of how mathematics is taught and done at universities today. This talk is intended for general audiences, on topics of current interest in Mathematics and Mathematics Education. The lecture is free of charge. Contact the Department of Mathematics if you need further information.

Minority representation when multiple representatives are elected

This talk will consider various ways of electing multiple representatives to a body such as a town council. Many methods, including voting districts and proportional representation, will be discussed but the focus will be on the the effect of the number of votes which a voter may cast (ranging from one to the number of representatives elected) on the ability to elect a minority candidate with at-large voting.
