Taking the Leap: Caring for the Earth and One Another

UNI will host “Taking the Leap: Caring for the Earth and One Another.” Guest speakers Anthony Rogers-Wright (in person) and Avi Lewis (via livestream) will speak about their work fighting for environmental justice and the growing movement to create a better, more sustainable world by addressing the climate crisis. Rogers-Wright is the U.S. coordinator for The Leap, an organization co-founded by author Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis, a journalist and filmmaker. This event is free and open to the public. 

Wayne Au, Pallischeck Visiting Professor

Wayne Au, author and professor in the School of Educational Studies at the University of Washington Bothell, will present "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!’: Exposing the humbug of high-stakes, standardized testing." He will discuss major problems with using standardized tests to make high-stakes decisions about students, teachers, administrators and schools, as well as provide some concrete examples of better forms of assessment that our schools could be using instead.

UNI Teacher Education Induction Convocation

The College of Education will host its bi-annual Teacher Education Induction Convocation. Three hundred and eighteen students have satisfied requirements for admission into the UNI Teacher Education Program and are invited to participate in the formal ceremony, the official induction of students into that field of study. Shelly Vroegh, 2017 Iowa Teacher of the Year, will deliver the convocation address.

3rd Annual Town Hall for Community Engagement

Faculty, staff and students are invited to meet nonprofit community leaders to create partnerships that will support faculty research and scholarship, build service-learning opportunities to complement classroom instruction and introduce students to service projects. Nonprofit community leaders are invited to meet faculty, staff and students to create partnerships that will build capacity for their organizations, mission, programs and services.

Ethics and Responsibility Pre-Conference Workshop and Reception: Addressing Culture Change in Renewing the Civic Mission of Higher Education

The workshop will discuss the importance of campus/community partnerships and how to create opportunities for students to build capacity for service-learning and community engagement. The importance of comprehensive support for students and the need for building agency to create successful experiences will be addressed. Registration is required.
