Wayne Au, Pallischeck Visiting Professor

Wayne Au, author and professor in the School of Educational Studies at the University of Washington Bothell, will present "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!’: Exposing the humbug of high-stakes, standardized testing." He will discuss major problems with using standardized tests to make high-stakes decisions about students, teachers, administrators and schools, as well as provide some concrete examples of better forms of assessment that our schools could be using instead.

Movie Premiere: Moving Words

"Moving Words" is a collaboration between youth in the Waterloo Writing Project, Shuaib Meacham's hip-hop literacy group, The Truth and UNI art students. The project encourages all participants to reflect on the importance of community and citizenship while also acknowledging and celebrating the similarities and differences between each of our experiences through creative lenses. Waterloo Writing Project students will use ideas generated through shared journal exercises between all students as inspiration to write creative written works that will be passed on to 3D Concepts students who will, through the support of the UNI Digital Media Hub, create short, stop-motion films based on the writers' works. The Truth musicians will then use the written works and the films to create a soundtrack that will be layered on to each film. This semester-long collaboration will culminate in a public movie premiere (complete with a red carpet!) at the Waterloo Center for the Arts where the community is invited to celebrate alongside these writers, musicians and artists and see the films they created together projected on the "big screen". A panel discussion with all of the artists will follow the screening.

Jacobson Center for Comprehensive Literacy Summer Institute 2016

This four-day institute will offer details for designing a rigorous and challenging curriculum that includes research-based practices, differentiated instruction and scaffolding techniques to guarantee the literacy success of all students. Based on the professional work of Linda Dorn and Carla Soffos, the institute provides educators with practical resources aligned with the Iowa Core State Standards and supported by theories of self-regulation and transfer.

Education Research Afternoon

This two-part event includes a presentation and Q&A on a topic related to conducting research in PreK-12 education and an hour to get feedback and support for your current education research project. Attend either session. The 3:30 presentation will be "Literacy through Science: Re-engineering the Educational Environment for Optimal Performance in More than One Domain," presented by Soh Meacham and Beth Van Meeteren, of the UNI Regents' Center for Early Developmental Education.
