Tallgrass Prairie Center founder and advocate Daryl Smith will lead a leisurely walk along the trails of a highly diverse campus prairie planting as part of Iowa Prairie Heritage Week. The walk is open to the public.

Visiting artist Matt Wilson will present a recital featuring UNI faculty artists. New York based drummer and Grammy nominee Matt Wilson is one of todays most celebrated jazz artists. He is universally recognized for his musical and melodic drumming style as well as being a gifted composer, bandleader, producer, and teaching artist. This event is free and open to the public.

The UNI Museum is hosting "It Takes an Iowan" at the Marshall Center School (corner of W. 23rd and Indiana Streets) from Sept. 9 to Oct. 8. This exhibit, provided by Silos and Smokestacks, focuses on Iowans as leaders in the ongoing endeavor to provide food for the nation and the world. The exhibit will be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It Takes An Iowan was created by Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA). SSNHA is one of 49 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and is an affiliated area of the National Park Service. The heritage area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa. Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm life, agribusiness, and rural communities—past and present. View the night sky through the computer controlled telescope at the Earth and Environmental Science Observatory. This event is free and open to the public; meet before 9 p.m. to get to the observatory (near the polar bear). No late admissions will be allowed; no food or drink and no cellphones or other electronic devices can be used during the observatory visit.

The topic will be UNI STEM Ambassadors, a program that was revamped during the summer. STEM Ambassadors are undergraduate volunteers with declared STEM majors or minors who represent their department at on and off campus STEM events. UNI STEM provides professional development, organization of the group and incentives (t-shirts, uniforms, transcript notations) for participation. Attendees will learn about the program, how to nominate a student from your department and help identify events and activities for which STEM Ambassadors can assist.

Join us for this new and exciting School of Music event! The showcase will feature outstanding faculty and student chamber groups, as well as faculty-student collaborations in a prism concert setting. A prism concert is an interactive concert in which the different participating groups rotate sets throughout the night, allowing the audience to encounter each group on several different occasions/moods throughout the evening. This event is free and open to the public.

Sandra Steingraber will speak on the topic “Be Arrested If Necessary”: The Case for Science in Action. She will discuss the role of ecology and climate science in a time of climate emergency, the role of scientific evidence as an agent of cultural and political change and the differences between objectivity and neutrality. A book signing and reception will follow the lecture.
