Upon admission to the University of Northern Iowa, a student is classified as either a Resident or Non-Resident of the State of Iowa for tuition purposes. A student's classification is based upon the information that they provided on that Application for Admission and upon other credentials.

To request a change to one's residency classification, a student must complete and submit the Residency Classification Application.

It is strongly recommended that students read the General Information Regarding Residency prior to filling out and submitting their application for consideration.

Students who wish to discuss their residency classification at the University of Northern Iowa, or students who are seeking information regarding how to change their residency, may make an appointment with Mary Baumann, Associate Registrar, Office of the Registrar, (319-273-2112 or  If you are a new student to the university who is in their first semester or seeing to be admitted, please contact the Office of Admissions at 319-273-2281.
