13.06 Coordination of Fund-raising by UNI Campus Units

Purpose

To maximize the support that UNI receives through gifts and sponsorships, it is essential that requests being made by various campus units to solicit charitable gifts be pre-approved and coordinated by the UNI Foundation. This policy details the procedures to be followed by campus units seeking such approval.

Policy Statement

  1. Annual Drives

It is important that the regularly scheduled fund drives or membership drives of various campus units be scheduled at complementary times. Any unit planning to conduct such a drive must receive prior approval by the UNI Foundation's Director of Annual Giving and have its drive placed on the University's annual fund-raising calendar. Only drives that are entered on the University’s annual fund-raising calendar will be eligible for assistance from the UNI Foundation and UNI Alumni Office.

  1. Campaigns

Campaigns (special fund-raising efforts that involve multiple solicitations) with goals of over $10,000 or campaigns to raise funds for any capital (construction, renovation, equipment) project must be reviewed and approved by the respective unit head (Dean or Director). While considering such approval, the respective unit head must take into account the operating costs (maintenance, utilities and future upkeep) associated with the capital project and if needed, build in an endowment fund with an annual pay-out equal to the anticipated operating costs. This decision will be made with the agreement of the project coordinator, Vice President for Administration and Financial Services and the President of the UNI Foundation. The proposal will then be forwarded to the President of the UNI Foundation. The President of the UNI Foundation will assess the campaign’s potential for success and its impact on other campus fund-raising efforts. If the campaign is to raise funds for a capital project, the Vice President for Administration and Financial Services will be asked to assess the project’s feasibility and, in conjunction with the requesting unit, determine the actual cost of such a project.

Proposals for any campaign should be submitted for review as far in advance as possible, at least 60 days before fund-raising is to begin. Proposals for capital campaigns should be submitted for review at least six months before fund-raising is to begin. For additional information, contact the President of the UNI Foundation.

  2. Gifts and Sponsorships

Any campus unit that wants to solicit individuals, businesses or foundations for gifts or sponsorships of $1,000 or more must receive approval from the UNI Foundation's Director of Annual Giving at least 30 days prior to the planned solicitation taking place.
