CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa has a wide range of activities planned to recognize Veterans Day and honor members of the armed forces. Thursday, Nov. 8, veterans, student volunteers and UNI faculty will tie yellow ribbons around trees on campus to commemorate veterans. Those who wish to participate in the ribbon tying should meet at 5 p.m., Nov. 8, in front of the Maucker Union.
On Friday, Nov. 9, volunteers will be handing out flags throughout the day for students to stake in the field west of the Campanile. A flag ceremony will take place at 12:45 p.m., in front of the West Gym. The ceremony will feature speeches from a UNI student veteran and faculty member. It will also feature a National Roll Call, in which the names of veterans and current armed forces members at UNI will be called and a moment of reflection will take place.
A reception will follow the ceremony in front of the West Gym. Both the flag ceremony and the reception are open to the public.
Throughout the week, students will be in Maucker Union handing out yellow ribbon lapel pins in honor of Veterans Day. There will also be a Wall of Honor in Maucker Union, on which students and faculty can post pictures of veterans and leave special messages.
