CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's New Horizons Band will perform a spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 5, in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC) on the UNI campus.
The band will perform a variety of traditional concert band repertoire that will include marches, overtures, a "Music Man" medley and Duke Ellington selections. The band will also perform the "Iowa New Horizons March," an original composition by Robert Logan, retired Iowa band director and composer from Clear Lake. He will guest conduct his own composition.
"Haskell's Rascals" by Paul Yoder will feature New Horizons Band percussion section members Larry Klinger, Rita Losh and David Pounds, as well as UNI New Horizons Band student instructors Geoff Bryant, senior music education major; Anna Fewins, junior music education major; and Teresa Smith, senior music education major. A reception will be held in the lobby of the GBPAC immediately following the concert. Admission is free.
The New Horizons Band is sponsored by the UNI School of Music and the UNI Community Music School. The group includes members ages 50 and older with various musical backgrounds who travel from all over Iowa to rehearse and perform. Diana Blake, retired music educator and director of the New Horizons Band, says new members are welcome to join the group.
