CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's New Horizons Band will perform a spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 6, in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC) on the UNI campus.
The concert will include "Mannin Veen" and "Death and Transfiguration," standard concert band repertoire from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Jim Moeller and Rich Scheffel will be featured as tuba soloists in a performance of "Figuero in Stereo." "At a Dixieland Jazz Funeral" will feature the New Horizons Band Dixieland Combo. A reception will be held in the lobby of the GBPAC immediately following the concert. Admission is free.
The New Horizons Band is sponsored by the UNI School of Music and the UNI Community Music School. The group includes members ages 50 and older with various musical backgrounds who travel from all over Iowa to rehearse and perform. The band started in 1999 with 17 members and now has 80. Diana Blake, retired music educator and director of the New Horizons Band, says new members are welcome to join the group.
