CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present 'MA Exhibition, Spring 2002' from Sunday, April 21 through April 28, with an opening reception hosted by the graduating artists from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 21.

As a prelude to the opening, and as part of UNI's 'Arts in April' celebration, the Gallery is offering a short walking tour of public art on campus from 1 to 3 p.m. The tour will begin, at 1 p.m., in the Kamerick Art Building's (KAB) first floor lobby and circle the campus, including a stop in the Piazza at the Redeker Center for refreshments. The tour will end in the KAB lobby, just as the 'MA Exhibition' opening reception is scheduled to begin. All events are free and open to the public.

Artists featured in the master's thesis exhibition are Justin Campoy of Waterloo, Karla Oler of Cedar Falls, and Yayoi Teramoto, a native of Saitama, Japan. Campoy creates large scale paintings while Teramoto paints small canvasses. Oler, two-time recipient of the Tostlebe-Ray Graduate Art Scholarship, makes prints and builds mixed media floor pieces.

Public art is a collective term for art objects, landscape and architecture located in places accessible to the public. UNI's campus art collection spans a century, beginning with the murals of Lang Hall, installed in 1902. A public art purchase program was instituted on the UNI campus in 1960 by former UNI President J.W. Maucker to promote the arts and emphasize the liberal arts focus of general education programs. A similar program became state law in 1979. Named The Iowa Art in State Buildings Program, the law requires that one-half of one percent of the budget for new or significantly renovated state buildings is to be spent on artwork.

In addition to Sunday's tour, guided tours are available by appointment by calling (319) 273-3095.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The gallery is located at the corner of Hudson Road and West 27th Street, on the main floor of the Kamerick Art Building. For more information, call (319) 273-3095 or visit www.uni.edu/artdept/gallery.
