UNI Driver Education Endorsement program begins Fall 2013

UNI Continuing and Distance Education is offering a new course sequence leading to the Driver Education (5–12) Endorsement. Beginning Fall 2013, the program allows teachers to earn the endorsement by completing nine units of credit. Course topics include accident prevention, drug and alcohol abuse, vehicle safety and behind-the-wheel driving.

The endorsement program is offered via Adobe Connect, an interactive desktop video conferencing system, with in-car and in-person experiences as arranged. Some coursework is offered online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system requiring Internet access and a web browser.

For licensed secondary teachers, completion of the courses indicated in the program of study qualifies individuals to teach both the classroom and behind-the-wheel components of driver education. Elementary teachers who have at least two years of teaching experience can meet the secondary student teaching requirement by completing the Experience in Safety Education course and providing a letter that documents the number of years of classroom experience.
