PHYSICS 5186 Studies in Modeling Instruction and Prisms: Mechanics -- 4 unit(s)
This is a graduate physics content and pedagogy course specifically developed for the 2013-14 Iowa Regents Modeling and PRISMS Workshop - professional development for high school physics and physical science teachers. The workshop includes a 3-week summer institute on the UNI campus followed with 2013-14 academic year professional development and support. Participating teachers are required to participate in both summer and academic year components. Participants are also required to implement instructional methods and resources they are introduced to during the summer in their physics and/or physical science classrooms. This course introduces the physics and pedagogy of Modeling Instruction and Physics Resources and Instructional Strategies for Motivating Students (PRISMS) PLUS with the focus on mechanics. The course introduces high school physics education research-based instructional methods and resources within the context of national/state science education initiatives. Participants will be engaged in hands-on activities and projects that involve physical data collection and analysis in the role of "students" with follow up discussions and reflections on how these materials and techniques may be adapted for high school physics classrooms in the role of "professional colleagues".
