KISS Solar Car Kits
(Keep It Simple Students!)

KISS Solar Car Kits

Students construct their own mini solar car and use it to learn about solar energy. They learn how the motor works, understand solar panels, and acquire knowledge on gearing systems while completing a fun activity. Folding Foil Ovens

Folding Foil OvensLightweight units reaching temperatures up to 250-300°F. All you need is your own cooking pot and we provide the oven and plastic cooking bag. Only available for Iowa educators to borrow through F.R.E.E. (F.R.E.E. Loan Form). To purchase, visit Solar Cookers International. Or make your own ovens by using these as a template! Simply trace them onto foil-faced bubble wrap sold in rolls for attic insulation.

Single Solar CookersSingle Solar Cookers

A durable solar oven that can reach temperatures up to 315°F. This solar oven has multiple reflection panels and features a glass door to retain the heat. The oven is big enough to hold a pot or casserole dish. Only available for Iowa educators to borrow through F.R.E.E. (F.R.E.E. Loan Form). To purchase, visit Solar Cookers International.

Double Solar CookersDouble Solar Cookers

Holds up to two 10’’ casserole dishes while reaching temperatures of about 250-300°F. The oven is easy to use – just put in the sun for two to five hours and your food cooks! You never have to worry about overheating, because this solar oven acts more like a crock pot keeping the heat at a moderate temperature. KISS Wind Kits
(Keep It Simple Students!)

KISS Wind Kits

Students are able to create five different wind turbines. The kit also includes instructions on how to create pinwheel and spoke blades. Students can test their own blades with the LED light sticks included in each kit. View the instruction manual (pdf) to see a complete list of everything you receive in a KISS Wind Kit. Propeller Kits

Propeller KitsWith each propeller kit, students receive nine different kinds of blades that they are able to test out on the wind turbines. Using a multimeter and a hair dryer or fan, students compare output for blade shape, size, and number. This a great critical thinking and hands on experience for the students. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).

Kestral MetersKestral Meters

Kestral meters allow students to measure the average, instantaneous, and maximum wind speed. Simply by blowing into the blade on top, students can measure their own wind speed and compare their results to the Beaufort scale, charts designed for wind turbines, to see how windy they are in comparison. It’s a fun way to compete with other students for the highest number and to feel how much wind is needed to power a wind turbine. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).

Wind Tunnel

Borrow the vinyl cover to turn a matched pair of fans into a safe place to test your wind turbines. You will need your own box or other fans and velcro. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form). Or make your own tunnel from a tablecloth vinyl available at fabric stores using this instructional video.

Pedal Power Energy Bike

Pedal Power Energy Bike

Made possible by Alliant Energy, this energy bike is a hands on experience that allows the students to create their own energy to light up three different types of light bulbs. Through this experience, the bike demonstrates the amount of energy each one needs to be powered. The bike is easy to assemble, and is available to be loaned out to schools across the state of Iowa (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).


Mobile Power Tower

Mobile Power TowerProvided by Alliant Energy, this unit can be loaned out to schools to show the use of alternative energy. It consists of two solar panels, one wind turbine, and a street light that is able to transmit data wirelessly online about wind speed, direction, solar energy, and more. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).

Kill-A-Watt MeterKill-A-Watt Meter

With this device, simply connect the appliance and it will display the amount of watts used to power the appliance. The lower the wattage the more efficient the appliance is. This is a great way to teach energy expenses, ways to conserve energy, and test out your own energy efficiency. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).

This device is able to measure heat coming from a surface. It’s a great use to use for checking areas where heat can be lost. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).

This is a fun way to teach students the uses of fuel cells and how they are used to power electrical devices with green energy. Included is a teaching manual along with experiments to test out the car kits. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).


H-Tec Solar – H2 Demo

H-Tec Solar – H2 DemoThe solar hydrogen experimentation system allows students to experiment with producing and storing of hydrogen and oxygen, fuel cell efficiency, and operating the fuel cell. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).

Dismountable Fuel CellsDismountable Fuel Cells

This kit is a dismountable fuel PEM cell. It allows students to take apart and understand the dynamics of fuel cells. Available for Iowa educators to borrow (F.R.E.E. Loan Form).
