IN MEMORIUM: DELNO WEST

RMMRA notes with sadness the passing in June, 1998, of one of the founding members of the Association, Delno C. West. West, Professor of History at Northern Arizona University (where he served for a time as chair of the History Department and director of the Honor’s Program), was a president of the Association and the general coordinator of three annual meetings that were held in Flagstaff and at the Grand Canyon. His teaching centered around medieval Europe and he published widely on the history of Christianity. His numerous books and articles include The Librio de las Profecias of Christopher Columbus (1991). He was a fine scholar and a good friend. He will be missed.

The Association has established a Senior Scholar Award, in Del West’s memory, for a paper delivered at the annual conference. The inaugural award will be presented for a paper given the 2000 annual meeting.

1999 CONFERENCE: TEMPE, ARIZONA

1999 RMMRA Conference participants and Association members gathered for the 31st annual meeting in Tempe, Arizona on May 20-22. The theme of the conference was "Marvels and Commonplaces in the Middle Ages & the Renaissance." Plenary addresses included Asuncion Lavrin's "The New World as Wonder: Physical and Spiritual Encounters in the New World" and Victor Skretkowicz's "Philhellenic Shakespeare."

The conference included 37 panels and over 100 participants from North America and Europe.

During the conference weekend, participants were entertained by medieval and Renaissance music performed by Cantemus and many took advantage of the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon and nearby museums and outdoor activities in Phoenix, Sedona, and Tucson.

At the business meeting, President Nancy Gutierrez, (Arizona State University) thanked Nancy K. Spatz (University of Northern Colorado) for her tenure as President the previous 2 years. Susan Aronstein (University of Wyoming) continued as Treasurer and Karen Robertson (Vassar College) as Secretary. New executive board members were confirmed: Phebe Jensen (Utah State University), Jean McIntyre (University of Alberta), Ann Scott (Northern Arizona University), Charles Smith, Paul Thomas (Brigham Young University), and Michael Walton.
