The fourth meeting of Muchas Manos Light Work was held on October 21, 2007. The meeting was called to order by Gloria Adams at 2:55. It was hosted at Gloria Adam's house: 3912 Jennings Drive; Gloria Adams made some wonderful food for the barbecue. In attendance were Gloria Adams, Chris Dunkelberg, Chris Schrage, Joel Kiesey, Holly Gleich, Chelse Monnier, and Yin-Ya Huang. Old business  was discussed. MMLW’s logo is registered with the state and the process will be finalized in a few weeks. Also, MMLW is an official UNI Non-profit organization. New business that was discussed at the meeting were speaking appointments, the scholarship, and fundraising. The members of Muchas Manos Light Work also set the group’s priorities; in terms of which projects we should work on first.

Brochures and packets were handed out by Chris Schrage. The group discussed information in the packets. Some changes were made to the brochures. The packets, we discovered, would be quite useful when we are giving speeches and informing the public about Muchas Manos Light Work. Chris Schrage will be speaking at the Lion’s Club on November 12th. Gloria Adams will be speaking to the Osage Sister City Organization on October 28th. Other publicity that MMLW is currently working on is putting an ad on the screen in the CBB.

MMLW’s goal for the scholarships is to have enough money to distribute among scholarship recipients in the fall of 2008. In order to do so, the club will have to raise $3000. The $3000 could possibly cover two to three scholarships because the price of college is anywhere from $700-$3000. The group discussed possibly having a cap on the amount that can be received by scholarship to $1500, in order to allocate more money to more applicants. The purpose of the scholarship is also to solely cover tuition and books. Members of MMLW decided that scholarship applicants should be reviewed every year.  People who have already received the scholarship will have first priority in the selection process. However, during the annual revision, new applicants will also be considered based on test scores and GPA.

The group discussed two ways to raise money: 1) fundraising and 2) endowments. For family weekend, the group decided to have a football raffle. The UNI Football players should autograph a football. Raffle tickets will be sold for a dollar. Then on game day, Saturday, President Allen will draw the winner.  Tickets should be sold from Chris Schrage’s office: CBB 261 and at tailgating on Saturday. Joel Kiesey volunteered to organize the raffle and call the athletic department. Initially money raised from the fundraisers will go towards the scholarship. Eventually, the money raised from fundraising will go towards an endowment. The purpose of endowments is to generate more money over a quicker period of time. The goal for the scholarship is to try to build an endowment of $60,000.

The final task that was accomplished during the meeting was prioritizing our projects. MMLW’s first priority is the scholarship and providing school supplies for the Siares community. The second priority is our current project, the library.

The next meeting will be on November 25th at the lounge outside 261 CBB at 3:00 PM. Everyone is supposed to bring snacks.

Chelse Monnier volunteered to provide an outline for the next meeting and translate the scholarship application from English to Spanish.

Chris Dunkelberg motioned to adjourn the meeting at 4:30 PM. Chelse Monnier seconded the motion.
