Spark dynamically symbolizes the instant of inspiration, of creation. An instant that is thought to be the birth of our universe in the Big Bang, the birth of the heavier elements in supernovas and, conceptually, the birth of an idea. Beginning in a point, located near its Periodic Plaza, Spark sweeps up and away from an explosive opening, illustrating that twinkle-in-time when physics or intuition jumps a gap to become action and reality. It is symbolic of the unfolding of space/time and/or the burst of creative energy that spawns a new idea.

One-hundred-and-nine laser-cut elemental symbols perforate the conical form and create a striking chaos of information that is visually active with implied movement. The symbols are arranged, not periodically, but by scale in accordance with their abundance in the Earth's crust–with the more abundant elements being larger. The Periodic Table, arranged in circular form at the sculpture's base, hints that this puzzle has a more meaningful pattern.

Outdoor lighting illuminates the sculpture's interior giving it a torch-like appearance and casting the shadow of the elements into the environment. The lighting also presents interpretations or impressions of radiation or spectrochemistry.
