Information about GLOBE Iowa workshops

Each year GLOBE Iowa will offer educators a variety of GLOBE/Project WET workshops. Participation in the basic GLOBE workshop results in certification in GLOBE. The basic workshops is six and 1/2 days long and is free to any Iowa teacher. All participants must provide a $50 deposit to reserve a place in the workshop. Deposits will be returned upon completion of the workshop. Lodging and meals are provided. Participants will also be reimbursed for some travel expenses. GLOBE Iowa will reimburse sub pay to schools for teachers attending a workshop that takes place during the school year.

2002 Basic Workshop Dates and Locations

Information on 2003 workshops will be announced in August or September.

To register for a GLOBE Iowa workshop, visit the GLOBE Workshop Registration Site or email Marcy Seavey, GLOBE Iowa Co-coordinator. Workshops are listed by city on the GLOBE Registration Site.

Workshops include training in GLOBE Atmosphere, Hydrology, Soils, Landcover/Biology and GPS protocols. Also included is a full Project WET training. Participants receive The GLOBE Program Teachers Guide and the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide. Time is taken to explore how both of these programs can be integrated into K-12 classrooms. Participants also learn how to use the GLOBE website to upload student data to GLOBE, produce and manipulate visualizations (maps and graphs) of GLOBE data including data provided by their students, and to contact GLOBE students and scientists around the world.

Each Basic Workshop begins on Sunday evening with registration, a reception, and introduction activity. Monday through Friday are divided between protocol, activity, computer and special sessions. Saturday is a review and celebration of all that has been accomplished throughout the week. Saturday will include discussion of implementation of GLOBE and Project WET.

GLOBE Iowa Basic Workshop Schedule

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Following the workshop, teachers will have the support of the GLOBE Iowa office. GLOBE Iowa can loan GPS units to GLOBE schools and connect GLOBE teachers and students with local scientists and resource people. GLOBE Iowa will also keep teachers informed about new activities and materials available from GLOBE (i.e. GLOBE will be is coming out with a series of BIG BOOKS for elementary classrooms. These books will be offered free to all GLOBE teachers. GLOBE Iowa will inform teachers about these and other opportunities).

The GLOBE workshop is somewhat intense (but also FUN!). Sessions begin at 8:00 and end each night between 6:00 and 9:00pm. For this reason, lodging and board will be provided throughout the week for all participants. Local teachers are not required to stay in provided housing but are encouraged to do so. Thursday from 4:00pm on has been set aside as a "Free Evening". Host schools will provide participants with information on local dinning and attractions for this "On Your Own" evening. Thursday dinner is the only meal not provided by GLOBE Iowa.

GLOBE workshops are very hands-on. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and shoes and be prepared to be outside at least some every day.

The GLOBE Iowa workshop can be taken for two graduate hours of credit. Contact Marcy Seavey for more information about taking GLOBE Iowa Workshops for credit or Certificate License Renewal Credit.
