What is GLOBE?
GLOBE is a worldwide network of students, teachers, and scientists working together to study and understand the global environment. Students and teachers from more than 12,900 schools in more than 100 countries are working with research scientists to learn more about our planet. GLOBE students collect data in 4 major areas: Atmosphere, Hydrology, Soils and Land Cover/Biology. They use protocols developed by GLOBE scientists to insure that data collected in Iowa is as valid and reliable as data collected by students in Australia, Bulgaria or Greece. Scientists use this data as ground truthing to satellite image information. Students, teachers, parents and the public can view the combined data from all GLOBE schools in the visualizations section of the GLOBE Program website. The GLOBE partnership between teachers, students and scientists is one which benefits education and science. GLOBE Iowa is the Iowa Academy of Science franchise of The GLOBE Program. It is currently the only franchise offering GLOBE workshops in Iowa. The GLOBE Iowa training team is made up of science teachers and educators from across the state. Members of the team who are currently teaching, use GLOBE in their classrooms. The GLOBE Iowa workshop combines the traditional GLOBE workshop with a Project WET workshop to allow teachers more resources that integrate the GLOBE Program into all areas of the curriculum. The following webpages provide more information on The GLOBE Program and Project WET:
