Style Manual

The best way to ensure style continuity throughout the product is to identify the rules at the beginning.  This manual, also known as a project standards manual, will help establish a set of expectations recognized by the client and production team.

Based upon the standards listed in the Alessi and Trollip book on pages 466-7, specify the following standards in your style manual.  Some of the standards may seem irrelevant to your project (i.e., use and placement of the logo).  If both you and your client agree that the specified standard does not apply to your project, then explain this in your style manual.

Look and Feel

Use and placement of a logo

Font type, style, color, and size for text

Different levels of headings

Use of colors

Overall screen layout (particularly if delivered via the Web)

Look and placement of buttons

Style Conventions

Grammar ( e.g., use of active and passive voices, tenses, and moods).

Punctuation

Spelling

Language (e.g., gender-related language, use of names, and locations).

Cultural/Age

Graphics

Video

Functionality

Restrictions on the amount of information needed to create a screen, for example, 40 kilobytes per screen (particularly if delivered via the Web).

User interface (e.g., Use of certain keyboard conventions, such as F1 for help, alternative input devices)

Requirement for keyboard equivalents for each area clickable by a mouse.

Others . . .

This manual does not have to be a 300-page book.  It just needs to have enough information to guide the design of the product.  Remember that a picture is worth a 1000 words. Examples or screenshots of how you want your screens to appear will increase the clarity of your description.
