Scanning a photo or line drawing isn't too difficult. The difficult part is trying to figure out the resolution to use and how to make the file size small while keeping the quality high. What file format should you use - jpg or gif?

Here is your opportunity to try it out for yourself and evaluate the file size and quality of various scanned images.

  1. Select a line art image from one of our textbooks. Scan this line art image at both 50, 150, and 300 ppi.
  2. Select a photo from one of our textbooks. Scan this photo at 50, 150 and 300 ppi.
  3. Insert these images into a Word document.
  4. In the Word document, explain the differences you observe between the size and quality of these images and their relative file sizes.
