This is your opportunity to design your own technology-using classroom. You are working with other Teacher Education students who are interested in students at a similar level to you (Primary/Elementary, Upper/Elementary, Secondary).
You need to identify the students you will have in your classroom, the topics you will be teaching and then the technology and physical requirements that will make the learning environment most efficient.
While your task is based upon the Scenario 1 in your book (pg. 206-207), you have gone through the following steps to identify your needs and identify the materials, technology and facilities that you will need.
- Begin by identifying the grade level and age of your prospective students.
- What are the learning styles of your students?
- What subject(s) will be taught in this room?
- Identify at least 2 units that will be taught in this room.
- Identify the types of technologies that will fit the needs and learning styles of your students.
- Research the technologies, furniture, equipment and other resources that help to address learning styles, cognitive styles, and/or multiple intelligences.
- Meet with your colleagues to verbally brainstorm what the ideal learning environment would include.
- Create a formal list or mindmap of all the technology, furniture, equipment, and other resources you want to buy.
- Further research the materials and resources that you want to purchase. Identify the resources that support your selection.
Based upon your research and discussion, create a proposal that will include the following information:
- Describe your students. Include information about a) age and grade of students, b) learning styles of your students, c) cultural background of your students (this includes the native Iowans as well as students from other parts of the world, d) special needs of your students. (BE SPECIFIC)
- Explain the curriculum that will be taught in your classroom. Describe a) the subject(s) taught, b) types of products/projects/assessments you expect of your students, c) the standards to which you will be aligning, and d) at least 2 units that you plan to teach in your classroom.
- Describe the physical/technological requirements for your curriculum. Include a) furniture, b) electrical requirements (outlets, lighting), c) technology sharing (projection, network access, etc.), and technology (computers, software, probes, DVD players, microphones, speakers, etc.)
- Describe your classroom. Include a) overall description of your classroom, b) size of your classroom, c) location of furniture and d) location of technology in the classroom.
- Provide a floorplan for your classroom. This must be created using a computer graphic/drawing program. It must show the location of the furniture, technology, and other important pieces. It must be created using electronic means.
- Describe the rationale for why you decided to arrange your class in the way that you have decided. How will this help you provide the learning experiences that you want to provide in your class? How will this affect the student-student or student-teacher interaction?
- Provide a spreadsheet that identifies the materials that need to be purchased. It must include the description, the cost of each item, the number of items, the extended cost. This spreadsheet should also calculate the total cost of this project.
Submit:
- Post your report online. Include the written description, the layout and the budget.
- Post your URL to the Assignment Dropbox.
