Women’s & Gender Studies (WGS) Announcements

August 27, 2009

Welcome back to a new year!  Please mark your calendars for the first Women’s and Gender Studies Advisory Board meeting on Monday, October 12 at noon in Baker 161.  We look forward reconnecting with everyone!  Please try to attend.  The meetings are open to all.  Our other meetings are December 14, February 8, and April 12.

WGS is excited to have new and returning graduate students and minors. We are glad you are here and are looking forward to a great year!  Our new WGS graduate students are Johnanna Ganz from Hamline University, Saint Paul, Minnesota; Andrew Goedeken from the University of Iowa; Kaitlin Korbitz from the University of Northern Iowa and Derk Babbit from the University of Northern Iowa.

As you may recall, last year was the first year of the implementation of the Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies.  We had three students complete the certificate.  They are Sonya Bock in Sociology, Tiffany Clark in Mental Health Counseling and Jessica Love in English Literature.

Our minor numbers are up.  This is thanks to some important work done by our programming and promotions coordinator last year, Kaitlin Korbitz. Women’s and Gender Studies enrollment for fall 2009 is 30 students.

Mark your calendar to attend CROW Forum this year.  The dates are October 5, November 2, December 7, February 1, March 1, and April 5.  You will be receiving a calendar announcing the presenters and their titles.  CROW (Current Research on Women & Gender) is held at noon in the CME Room 109A.  All are invited to gather for informal presentation and discussion.  CROW presenters are Annette Lynch, Design, Textiles, Gero and Family Studies; Ruth Chanani Hill, Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology; Jennifer Cooley, Modern Languages; Gloria Gibson, Executive Vice President and Provost; and Tara Opsal, Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology.

WGS has subcommittees for programming, strategic planning/student outcomes assessment, the graduate program, and the curriculum and is now looking to replace members whose terms are now up.  These committees make policy recommendations and oversee implementation of most of the WGS program.  The chairs of the subcommittees form the Steering Committee for WGS.  The Steering Committee meets with the Director twice a month to help with oversight of the whole program.  If you are interested in participating in any of these subcommittees please contact Karen Entz (Karen.entz@uni.edu or 273-7102) and let her know.

Please start to think about and schedule your teaching of WGS courses (both required and electives) for spring 2010.  Remember that the introductory WGS course is now part of the LAC and we easily filled two sections this semester.  The WGS courses are listed in the course catalog at the beginning of the list of all courses across campus.  This list is very important for WGS students as they look for our courses.  It is the easiest way for them to identify our electives and required courses.  Also, when we know far enough in advance, we will be able to catch courses taught at the same time.  Send your WGS spring courses to Karen Entz (Karen.entz@uni.edu) as soon as possible.

If you are offering any new courses which you would like placed in the WGS curriculum, let us know.  Our curriculum committee will review them.  You can find the criteria used to determine our electives on our website (www.uni.edu/womenstudies).

Events:

"News Talk"

The WGS faculty has been approached to lead a discussion on the attached, an opinion piece by Richard Bohen on misogyny entitled “Women at Risk.”  The discussion would be part of a program that takes place at University Book and Supply and is entitled “News Talk”.  It takes place on the first Saturday of the month (Oct. 3, Nov. 7, or Dec. 5), from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.  We are looking for a volunteer to lead this discussion.  The purpose of the “News Talk” program is to promote interest in the news.  Generally, the person leading the discussion will present for 15-30 minutes and then engages in discussion with the audience which is usually comprised of half students and half community members. Michael Blackwell will present on Sat., September 12, on race in the Obama era.

Safe Date Tailgate:
Women’s and Gender Studies Program would like to invite you to our Fourth Annual Safe Date Tailgate, Saturday, October 17 (UNI’s Homecoming) from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the SW corner of the North WRC Lot (tentative site).  This event is to raise awareness about safe dating and violence prevention on campus.  Campus and community members are invited to the tailgate for free food, drinks, and tailgating games.  You will hear more about this important WGS event as the semester progresses.

Call for Papers

The UCLA Center For The Study Of Women announces The Twentieth Annual Graduate Student Research Conference, 2010 Thinking Gender on Friday, February 5, 2010 in the UCLA Faculty Center.  In the past our WGS graduate students have attended this conference and found it very useful.  Thinking Gender is a public conference highlighting graduate student research on women, sexuality, and gender across all disciplines and historical periods.  They invite submissions for individual papers or pre-constituted panels.  This year they are particularly interested in research on labor, social justice, public policy, the global and globalization, race and ethnicity in the Americas, and the “new” economy (austerity) and its effects on women and people of color. Reference the submission guidelines at http://www.csw.ucla.edu/thinkinggender.html, and note that only complete applications adhering to the stated guidelines will be accepted.  Please also note that the Center for the Study of Women cannot provide travel funds for conference presenters.  Deadline for Submissions: Monday, October 19, 2010, by Noon.  They will only accept completed submissions emailed by the deadline, without exception.
