Women's & Gender Studies (WGS) Announcements May

NEWS:
Graduate Certificate in Women's and Gender Studies has passed through two faculty senates, the Graduate Council, the Graduate Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Senate. It will go into the University of Northern Iowa catalog for 2008-2010. WGS new minor will also start Fall 2008. Women's & Gender Studies graduate students Emily Cram and Jasmine Dowd's will be defending their theses. Ms. Cram's defense will be Thursday, May 8 at 1:00 in Baker 161. The title of her thesis is “Corpulent Counter-Publics: Radical Cheerleading and Resignification of the Fat Body.” Ms. Dowd's defense will be Monday, May 12 at noon in Baker 161. The title of her thesis is “The Queer Agent in Trans Narrative: “There's More than One Way to be Woman.” EVENTS: Living a Balanced Life: A Retreat for Women in Academia Oak Ridge Conference Center near Minneapolis , MN from June 30 - July 2, 2008. The retreat is co-sponsored by the following University of Iowa groups - the Council on the Status of Women, the Women's Resource and Action Center , and the Women in Science and Engineering program. Assistant Academic
and Professional Affairs Program (APAP) The
American Sociological Association (ASA) seeks a Program Assistant, an
entry level position for a BA-level sociologist, to work on projects
to support and grow the discipline and profession. The Program Assistant
will work with the Academic and Professional Affairs Program (APAP)
in a small team environment with many independent responsibilities.
Process: Review
of application materials will begin immediately. The goal is to hire
