Do you need to be kneaded?

Massage is manual soft tissue manipulation and includes pressing, causing movement, and/or applying therapeutic pressure to the body.  Massage has numerous benefits, the first being stress relief.

Massage acts on the nervous system to counteract the body’s response to stress.  It allows the body to “calm down” by helping the heart rate, blood pressure, and circulation to return to normal levels.  This relaxes muscle tension and helps the body to heal itself.  Through massage, you recognize your problem areas and allow yourself to correct your posture, the way you sleep, lift and carry things, or do anything else that may aggravate problem areas.
A second benefit of massage therapy is pain relief.  Chronic tension or injured muscles can result in decreased flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and to a collection of waste products.  In time, this reduced circulation will lead to the formation of ‘trigger points,” which are highly irritable spots that cause pain, tingling or other sensations in the body.
Massage releases contracted muscles; waste products are flushed away and replaced with oxygen and nutrients.  Muscles can be lengthened by stretching and kneading so that normal movement is restored.

A third benefit of massage therapy is that it helps a person to gain their peak performance level.  In addition to the benefits already mentioned, massage can allow you to be at your best in any active endeavor.  Massage increases flexibility and endurance, relaxes aching muscles, lowers fatigue levels, and accelerates the healing process of many athletic injuries.  Massage is an important adjunct of your complete exercise and health program.

Scheduling

Currently, we are only able to schedule appointments over the phone or in person.  To schedule an appointment, call (319) 273-6119 or stop by the Wellness Recreation Center, room 104.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

For identity purposes, we will ask to see your university ID card if you are paying by ubill or payroll deduction.  If you fall into this category, please bring your card along.  We also strongly advise you to bring along a bottle of water for consumption after your massage.  Massage therapy helps to release toxins from the muscles.  Drinking water after your appointment will help to flush these toxins from the body.

Tips to Enhance Your Visit

Your appointment time is reserved for you.  If you are unable to make your appointment, please contact us at least two hours in advance of your scheduled appointment or you will be charged the cost of the appointment.  Please note that we do have voice mail, and leaving a message on a Saturday or Sunday will dismiss you from charges for cancellations for Monday, for example.

Please arrive five minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time to ensure your session starts promptly.  A late start does not allow our therapist to work with you for the full time you were scheduled for.  In order to stay on schedule for the remaining clients of the day, we work to keep on schedule as best we can.

If you are a new client to our office, there will be a client intake form for you to fill out upon your arrival.  The form will request such information as prescribed medications or dietary supplements that the therapist should be aware of as well as symptoms you are experiencing at the time of your visit or that you have had in the past.  These intake forms are considered client confidential.

Payment is collected at the time of service, as outlined above in the “fees section.”  At this time we do not accept any insurance but would be happy to provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurance company.  Simply make your request to our office staff.

In order to fully enjoy your massage, we do ask you to turn off any cell phones or pagers during your time with us.

In order to respect your modesty, our therapists carefully drape you to ensure privacy and relaxation.  Our therapists will often advise you to undress to your comfort level.  Please talk with your therapist about any concerns you may have.

If you are traveling to the Wellness/Recreation Center from the community and you do not have a parking permit, there is a metered lot west of our facility.  If the lot is full, 23rd St. (east of our facility off of Hudson Road) offers some one and two hour parking spaces at no fee, though these locations are a slight walk to our facility.  If you choose to park in a lot identified for those with campus parking stickers, you run the risk of a ticket.  If you receive a ticket and it’s your first warning, the ticket is waved.  All other ticket charges you would be responsible for paying.
