Sole Power Mission: To promote walking, rollerblading, and bicycling as healthy alternatives to automobile commuting to the University of Northern Iowa.

Sole Power is a Wellness and Recreation Services program designed to encourage non-motorized commuting to campus.

Sole Power was originally funded by a grant from the Iowa Energy Center in Ames, with the grant proposal was written by faculty member, Dr. Rick Stinchfield.

Sole Power, based on the Green Triangle, promotes walking, rollerblading and bicycling as a healthy alternative to automobile commuting to. Sole Power promotes the use of helmets and encourages bike safety.

Students and faculty can become Sole-Powered by committing to leave their cars at home and walking or biking to campus or other destinations. Sole Power promotes the use of helmets and encourages bike safety. As part of the project, Public Safety will register bicycles for greater theft prevention.

The project is working with community and city leaders in developing Cedar Falls as a bike friendly city, with established biking routes and accommodations throughout the city for bicyclists for safe commuting.

Cedar Valley trail maps and air pumps for bike tires are available at the Wellness/Recreation Center. Outdoor Recreation in the Wellness/Recreation Center provides basic bike maintenance services. Sole Power water bottles are also available for individuals who choose to regularly commute by bike rather than car.

Events include involvement with the annual Earth Day Celebration, when free bike tune-ups are provided for students, faculty, and staff by Europa Cycle and Ski and other fun promotional activities occur.
