We strive to provide information covering all of the areas of wellness including social, physical, environmental, career/intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. Check out photos of previous fairs!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a Wellness Blood Profile?
  2. The Wellness Blood Profile contains a variety of tests which can help you to identify potential health issues.  It is used to screen for diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol, bone, liver, and kidney function.

  3. What are some of the common health issues/concerns that people find out about by going through this screening?
  4. Cardiovascular disease risks (including high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes); liver and kidney disease; anemia

  5. If I go to the doctor annually, why would I take part in this screening?
  6. If you normally have your blood tested during your annual physical exam, this screening could be used as a follow up from previous testing.  If you have put healthy measures into place, i.e. changed eating habits, stopped smoking or began exercising, this screening will help to show how these measures have improved your health.

  7. Is this a fasting test?
  8. Fasting is required for this test.  You should not eat or drink anything (other than water) twelve hours prior to having your blood drawn.  You may have plain water or a cup of black coffee (no cream or sugar) prior to testing.  Medications may be taken prior to having your blood drawn.

  9. What is the cost?
  10. One free wellness blood profile per academic year is available to UNI employees who qualify for insurance benefits.  A wellness blood profile is not filed with your health insurance, therefore will not have a co-pay associated with the service.  Students, retirees, spouses and partners may take part in the wellness blood profile screening for $20.

  11. What payment methods are accepted?
  12. Accepted methods of payment include cash, check, U-bill, or payroll deduction.

  13. Are there additional testing options available in addition to the wellness blood profile and what are the associated costs?
  14. Yes.  Other optional tests are available for a fee for each person who takes part (including those employees who receive the wellness blood profile for free).

CBC: Complete Blood Count.  A broad screening test to check for such disorders as
anemia, infection, and many other diseases.  $10.00

TSH: Thyroid Stimulating Hormone.  Test for thyroid function which regulates how your body uses its energy and food resources.  $5.00.  To determine whether or not to have this test, consider the symptoms of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

PSA: Prostate Specific Antigen.  Test for prostate cancer in men.  $10.00.  To determine at what age to begin screening, visit the American Cancer Society.

  15. Who will see my test results?
  16. Your test results are shared with only you and if you choose, your physician.  On the day of the screening, simply share the first and last name of your health care provider as well as the city they are located in and we will fax your results for you.

  17. How and when will I receive the results?
  18. The results are mailed directly to you and can be faxed to your family physician so you can discuss any abnormal tests.  Test results are mailed within one to two weeks of the draw.

Testimonials

My wife and I had our first blood chemistry profile (BCP) conducted at UNI in February 2009. When we got the results we both found out that our cholesterol numbers were quite high. At 30, neither of us felt that was a good thing to have happen. I also found out that my thyroid was not functioning properly which was brought to light by the optional thyroid test I had conducted through UNI. We had a doctor go over our results with us and make some recommendations. I am now on thyroid medication that has fixed my thyroid situation. I am also proud to say that we are both eating healthier and have lost quite a bit of weight since last year. I lost 40 lbs. and my wife lost 20 lbs just by changing our diets.
If it weren't for the red flags that were thrown through the initial BCP, neither of us would be in the better health we are right now. When we did a follow-up BCP at UNI this year, all our levels were in the proper range.
We are both very appreciative of UNI for offering this service to its staff and spouses.

When my second child was about five months old, I noticed that my physical and mental states were changing: exhaustion, difficulty losing weight, hair loss, severely dry skin, a feeling of being cold at all times, and an increased sense of frustration/anger. I rationalized it with having two small children while working full-time during the fall/winter months. When the blood chemistry profiles were offered by the Wellness Center, I called to schedule an appointment as I did every year, but decided for the first time to have my TSH checked. When I received the results, it was indicated that my thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were abnormally high - seven to eight times the normal level. Not knowing what this really meant, I scheduled an appointment with my family doctor. His first question to me was, "How are you functioning right now?" I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and put on medication immediately. Since that first check, I annually have my TSH checked through the Wellness Center via the blood chemistry profiles.
