Bringing Guests
Wellness and Recreation Services is pleased to accommodate campus visitors at the Wellness/Recreation Center (WRC) to the extent possible. Because the WRC is an academic building as well as a recreational facility highly used by university students, guidelines for personal guests and for University guests facilitate providing optimal service to these guests.
Personal Guests
Students and faculty/staff paid users can sponsor up to four (4) guests at a time with a $5.00 one day guest pass, which can be purchased at the WRC Welcome Desk. A 5 punch card can be purchased for $20.00 (a dollar per day discount) by students and faculty/staff who sponsor guests frequently. Guests must be at least 18 years of age (except during Family Hours).
Additionally, faculty/staff who have not paid the annual user fee may purchase one-day passes for themselves and/or their families.
Paid users may sponsor up to ten guests, above and beyond immediate family, for a $40.00 fee, with arrangements made two weeks in advance through Chris Denison, (319) 273-7160. No more than one group can be accommodated on any particular day. The sponsoring family must accompany the guests. Extended Guest Passes are available during Family Hours. No food is allowed during Extended Guest Pass activities.
Family Member Policy
As a paid user, you may bring your immediate family during family time at no additional charge. To admit your family, you will be asked to register family members when you present your UID at the Welcome Desk. This information will be referenced by the Welcome Desk staff when you visit the WRC throughout the year.
As a faculty/staff member who has not paid the annual user fee, a one day fee of $15.00 may be paid at the WRC Welcome Desk to bring in immediate family.
You may purchase guest passes at the Welcome desk (by check, payroll deduction, or ubill charge) for up to four guests beyond your family at $5.00 each or the five-punch guest card at $20.00.
If your family wants to sponsor a larger group of guests (such as your child’s friends or a family gathering), you may sponsor up to ten guests beyond immediate family members for a $40.00 fee. Arrangements must be made in advance with Chris Denison, Associate Director/Facilities (319) 273-7160. Only one group is scheduled a day so the enjoyment of other facility users is not hampered.
Supervision of Children
Children must be accompanied by a parent at all times in the WRC. Direct supervision of children by their parents is required, except in the following cases where an indirect supervision policy exists:
- In the leisure pool, children at least eight (8) years of age who pass a specified swim test (name is then kept on file) may be checked in with lifeguards by parents who inform lifeguards where they will be in the facility.
- In the case of teens at least sixteen (16) years of age, a parent must be in the facility but need not be directly supervising the teen.
- At the climbing wall, all climbers “sign in” upon arrival and “sign out” when leaving. Parents are expected to remain with their children at the wall. You are invited to attend a one-time WRS belay clinic, to learn to belay for your child. This allows more climbing time for your family, as you do not have to wait for WRS student staff to belay your children. The three-hour belay clinics are scheduled regularly throughout the year.
Restricted Areas
Children five (5) years and older are prohibited from using locker rooms of the opposite gender (i.e. a five (5) year old boy is prohibited from entering the women’s locker room). Families are encouraged to use the Family Changing Room located off the southwest corner of the Leisure Pool.
Children must be thirteen (13) years of age to use the fitness area/track. The UNI-Dome is sometimes available during early mornings and noontime, providing more room for walkers/joggers with youth/children and strollers.
Minors must be at least sixteen (16) years of age to use strength equipment and thirteen (13) years of age to use cardiovascular equipment and track.
Special Accommodations
Children of faculty/staff who are paid users and attend college elsewhere are allowed to purchase a guest pass for summer and school interim periods and use facilities without accompaniment of parent.
