Point Competition
The Intramural Program uses a structured point system to encourage group participation by houses, fraternities, sororities, clubs and off-campus groups.
Residence Halls
Teams from campus residence halls are organized according to the house in which they reside.
Students living in a residence hall must compete for the house where they reside. Should a student change residence halls during the school year, his/her eligibility changes to the new residence hall at the conclusion of the sport(s) currently in progress. Residence hall students may choose to participate with a fraternity/sorority or a club team. Residence Assistants are encouraged to actively participate in intramural activities with the respective residence halls.
Fraternities/Sororities
Teams representing all social fraternities/sororities which are recognized by the University of Northern Iowa are eligible for participation.
Both residence hall and off campus students may participate in intramural activities with teams representing their respective social fraternities/sororities. Students participating with such organizational teams must be active members and pledges. Social affiliates and inactive members may not participate with fraternity/sorority teams.
Clubs
Teams representing non-sport clubs which are recognized by the University of Northern Iowa are eligible for participation.
Residence hall students not participating with their respective hall team are eligible to participate with club teams.
Off Campus
Students living off campus who are not members of a fraternity/sorority or are not playing for a club team may form independent teams for competition. Off campus students are not eligible to compete for house teams without prior approval, and house students may not compete for off campus teams.
**Organization Roster Limit: There is a roster maximum of 85 participats per fraternity, sorority, recognized university clubs and off campus teams. A roster/membership list needs to be filed with the Intramural Office. The roster is open ended, names may be added or deleted prior to an activity. Organizational rosters may be submitted electronically to the Intramural Coordinator.
Non-Point Competition
Intramural competition is also established on a non-point basis to provide an opportunity to participate regardless of housing affiliation.
Co-Recreational
a. Overview
Activities such as softball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, racquetball, tennis, free throws, badminton and table tennis offer challenging opportunities for co-recreational participation.
b. Rules/Modifications
Current rules with intramural modifications apply for each sport. Male/female competition will be governed by the following:
1. An equal number of men and women must play in each sport.
2. A team playing short a person is allowed to play with an uneven number of men and women.
Tournaments and Leagues
Open tournaments such as co-rec softball, volleyball, basketball and soccer are available to all students, faculty and staff. A per team fee is charged for open tournaments.
Open leagues will be offered, in select team sports, to provide for team organization regardless of housing affiliation of team members. Individuals playing in an open league may not participate for any teams within the participations point leagues in that sport.
