The Wellness/ Recreation Center (WRC) is a state of the art facility completed in 1998. The WRC houses Wellness and Recreation Services, a department within University Health Services and the Division of Student Affairs. In addition, the WRC is the home of the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services.
The 244, 000 sq ft. facility is the April 2000 winner of the prestigious National Intramural- Recreational Sports Association Outstanding Sport Facility and the 1999 winner of the Athletic Business Magazine Facilities of Merit Award.The WRC is part of a larger west campus complex which also provides support for UNI Athletics.
Visitors to the WRC will find, “we truly do have something for everyone.” The WRC includes academic learning space and laboratories as well as:
- a fitness area
- a free weight room
- (10) multi purpose gymnasiums/basketball courts
- a 3-lane jogging track
- (6) racquetball / wally ball courts
- a 38.5 ft. climbing wall
- an 8 lane, 25 yd. competitive pool
- a leisure pool
- ( 5) aerobics/dance studios
- The Wellness Resource Lab
In addition, WRS also manages many outdoor and satellite facilities including :
- (8) lighted outdoor tennis courts
- 40 acres of play fields
- West Campus Complex with 2 rugby and 2 soccer fields
- Health Beat -a fitness area in the Maucker Union
The WRC has multiple non-programmed areas for social interaction. The two main social areas are the lower level and ground level lounges which feature spectacular views of the competitive pool, leisure pool and elevated track. Visitors to these lounges will also find benches, picnic tables and Kettler table tennis equipment. Paddles and balls can be checked out at the main welcome desk. The WRC has a variety of indoor and outdoor equipment for check out, rental and for sale
WRC facilities will be generally available to students, faculty, staff, spouse and sponsored guests for recreational use Monday through Friday from 6:00am- 8:00am, 12:00pm-1:00pm and 3:00pm-11:00pm.
Academic session weekend hours will be more extensive; 8:00am- 6:00 pm Saturdays and 3:00pm- 11:00pm on Sundays.
Recreational area hours are subject to change depending on interest as well as instructional, intramural, sport club and intercollegiate athletic schedules. Reduced operating hours will occur during summer session and interim semester break periods.
