Certification Classes

Registration: WRC 101 or Online Registration
*Non UNI-Students or Staff register in the 101 WRC office or
e-mail certifications@uni.edu for further instruction.
Payments: Fees must be received prior to class to complete registration.
Refunds: To receive a refund you must cancel your class within seven days of the class start date, a $5 processing fee will be charged.
Course Books: Full course prices (non-recertification or review courses) include course books.
Class Size: The minimum enrollment size is 6 participants.
Waiting Lists: If a class becomes full, a waiting list will be available. If a student drops the class, individuals on the waiting list will be notified via email.
Certification Validation Periods
- First Aid – 3 year
- CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer – 2 year
- Community CPR – 1 year
- Lifeguarding – 3 years
- CPR/AED for Lifeguards - 1 year
- Water Safety Instructor – Must teach as least one class during two year authorization period to keep certification current
- Bloodborne Pathogens: Preventing Disease Transmission – 1 year
Certification Course Descriptions & Schedules
First Aid & CPR Training
The purpose of the American Red Cross First Aid course is to give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic first aid care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive.

The American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course provides the skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies. This includes the use of automated external defibrillation to care for victims of cardiac arrest.

This course is for those who had or have a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate and wish to renew their certification. To be eligible for a review course you need to be within 24 months of your original certification date.

Lifeguard Training
The American Red Cross program provides lifeguards with skills to keep patrons of aquatic facilities safe in and around the water. This program includes training in first aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Must be at least 15 years of age before the end of the course.

This certification is for people who have or had a current Lifeguard Certificate, within the last 12 months and wish to renew. It includes a review of al lifeguard training components including in and out of water exercises as well as CPR and First Aid.
Participants must have current Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications at the beginning of the class.

The LGI course is a 26 hour class that provides the knowledge and the skills necessary to train instructor candidates to teach Lifeguard Training, First Aid and, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Through instruction on how to use course materials, conduct training sessions, and evaluation of participant progress. Instructor candidates must be at least (17) years of age before the end of the course.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training
The purpose of the American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens: Preventing Disease Transmission course is to train and provide individuals with an understanding of the intent of the Bloodborne Pathogens regulation issued by the Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
In addition the following topics will be covered; how disease transmission occurs, diseases of greatest concern, precautions to prevent disease transmission and steps to take if an exposure occurs.

Water Safety Instruction
The WSI class is a 30 hour class that provides knowledge and skills necessary to teach swimming lessons and other water safety classes through understanding how to use course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participant progress. Students must attend all classes to receive certification.
Must be at least (16) years of age before the end of the course.

Swimming Lessons
Small, personalized classes for persons of all abilities who want to learn basic swimming skills or who wish to perfect their strokes. This class also offers a good environment for students preparing their swimming skills for a lifeguarding or water safety instructor course.
