Welcome to the University of Northern Iowa! Being part of the UNI family provides a wonderful opportunity for you to learn, make new friends, and take advantage of everything UNI and Cedar Falls have to offer.
An important part of life at UNI is the opportunity to learn from outstanding faculty. I encourage you to ask questions in class, visit professors during their office hours or have a cup of coffee together in the Union. UNI faculty really want to get to know you and help you prepare for your career, graduate school or both, so be sure to take advantage of that opportunity.
Speaking of classes, you’ll probably find they’re more rigorous at UNI than they were in high school. (You may have more late nights in the library than you ever imagined!) Learning new things, defending and discussing what you’re learning, and embracing new concepts is all part of obtaining a college education. In fact, these skills will serve you well at UNI and beyond.
Just as you’re growing and learning new things every day, I’m doing the same as well. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned that you may find helpful: Listen to your heart. Listen to those you love and who love you. Do the right thing for the right reason, especially when it’s hard and when no one’s watching. Work hard. Live life. Through the years these touchstones have helped keep me on track as I continue to work toward my personal and professional goals. Give them a try and let me know how you’re doing with them.
A great fall semester is ahead of you! We’re all part of the UNI family, so when you see me on campus, please be sure to say hello, and I’ll do the same. All of us at UNI are so glad you’re here.
Purple for Life!
