Web Design Checklist

To insure a site the is visually attractive and user friendly, you should be able to answer YES to all these statements after you have completed your web page(s)/site. Certain items, as noted, are required by university policy to be included on all departmental web pages. They are not required on the personal home pages of faculty, staff or students.

  • University of Northern Iowa home page link on every page. (REQUIRED)

  • Footer listing contact information including office maintained by and an e-mail link to a full-time staff member or department e-mail address. (REQUIRED)

  • Title in the title tag. The title tag is what shows up in search engine listings and bookmarks, and is extremely important in identifying your page.

  • Meta tags listing the document description and keywords. Required so pages can be found by search engines.

  • Background color and background changed to white. This is not necessary when an image or color is used in the background of the page. It is necessary if you want the background for your page to be white. Mac browsers do not recognize the automatic background tag. Always set the background tag to white unless using a color or image as noted above.

  • Light background and contrasting text. Pages do not contain solid black backgrounds or dark backgrounds with similar text colors.

  • Every image has an alt tag with text describing the image.

  • Navigation system that allows user to go directly to UNI homepage from your page as well as easily navigate throughout all pages in your site.

  • Text is easy to read on the page.

  • If scripts are used, the page will still work if the user disables scripts on their system.

  • Color alone is not used to highlight important or timely information.

  • Only the standard web compatible colors are used.

  • When using tables, always use the correct html tags and add the summary tag.

  • When using multimedia or other dynamic content, ensure either a text version or alternative method of delivery.

  • Spell check the pages.
