Dear Members of the UNI Family:
As you all may have heard by now, Iowa’s three public universities are embarking on a historic review of their administrative and academic operations in order to maximize resources, improve efficiencies and contain rising costs. Our goal is to transform our organization into one that is sustainable for the long term, and true to our core academic mission of education, research and service as well as learning, discovery and engagement.
We are calling this effort Rising to the Next TIER to underscore our commitment to Transparency and Inclusiveness in the Efficiency Review. We respect the diverse views of our students, faculty, staff and community on and off our campus and encourage ALL of you to share your ideas with us.
The efficiencies you help identify will create savings that will be reinvested into programs that strengthen teaching/learning, research/intellectual contribution, and service/engagement, improve our administrative processes at all levels, and keep our high-quality public education affordable to Iowa students and their families.
The first phase of this comprehensive review will be conducted over the next few months. It will include an examination of all aspects of the three public universities – operational and business functions, programs at all levels, and both facilities and facility planning/usage. Everything is on the table and all ideas, questions, and input are welcome.
We want to engage and involve as many people as possible in this review!
To that end, we will be conducting interviews with key stakeholders during the week of April 7-11, 2014 and hosting an Open Forum on Monday, April 7, 2014 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Maucker Union Ballroom. For those unable to attend, live streaming of the Open Forum will be available directly from our efficiency page: http://www.uni.edu/efficiency. We will also be accepting your suggestions for program, policy and process improvements online at that same address at any time.
The University of Northern Iowa is strong, a proud partner with our other Regents Institutions, SUI and ISU, and this review will make all of us even stronger. As prudent stewards of public dollars, we have a responsibility to operate as efficiently as possible and ensure that our university thrives long into the future.
Thank you for helping us maintain UNI’s long tradition of academic excellence.
William N. Ruud, Ph.D.
