Library Scavenger Hunt

I have found that even students who have been at UNI for a while may not be familiar with what our library has to offer. Despite the growth of the worldwide web, the library is still the primary source for professional references in every discipline. We have a very good library with very helpful staff. Since you will be using the library for later assignments in this course, and it will certainly be an essential resource throughout your time at UNI, I thought I’d try to make sure you have found some of the library services you are most likely to use. I haven't included everything (e.g. maps, documents, special collections) so if you want to know more I encourage you to take a Library Tour or visit the library's orientation on the web (linked to our syllabus).. You can also register for a 1 hour course (350:010 Library Orientation). But for now I hope this will be a fun and enlightening introduction. While you are there I also encourage you to find a quiet corner where you can do your studying all semester, away from the distractions of roommates, TV, internet, games and your bed.

Fill in the blanks:
It is probably no surprise that you check out books at the counter closest to the library's entrance. This spot is known as the (see the overhead sign) : ______________________________ and it is also the place where you can put a hold on a book that you want but which someone else has checked out. You can also get keys to the library's study rooms (if there's one available) if you wish to meet with a group in the library. Just to the right of the Circulation Desk is the Interlibrary Loan Desk where you can request that books or journal articles that UNI does not have in its collection be borrowed or copied (respectively) from other libraries. It takes a little time and copies can be costly, but sometime you might really want that key reference available elsewhere.  Show that you've found Interlibrary Loan Desk by identifying one of the toys adorning their cabinets:  __________________________.  On the other side of the main entrance is the Browsing Room, a nice place to relax. Show you've found the Browsing Room by writing down the number of chairs found there: ________. Beyond the Browsing Room is the Library's classroom.

Just through the glass doors across from the library entrance you’ll find large circular area known as the _________________, manned by some of the library's best question answerers! Most often there will be more than 1 person there to help you – in fact there are chairs/stations for ________ reference librarians or assistants at that desk. They face many shelves of non-circulating reference books of all types. Locate the following reference books just to get a feel for what's available on those shelves. On one of the computers, go to the library's homepage is loaded, click on Books & Other Materials-Unistar, then Title. Type the first few words of the title Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical Psychology in the search box, press enter, click on the volume you want, and write down its call number ___________________.
Type in Essential Guide to Prescription Drugs, press enter, and write down its call number _________________.
Locate each of these on the Reference Shelves and identify the color of the binding of each:
Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical Psychology  _________________  (other school guides are nearby)
Essential Guide to Prescription Drugs ____________________ (other books on medications or herbs are nearby)

By the way – if you ever have trouble using Unistar double check your typing/spelling – you’ll find no references on pyschology!!  Peek down the rows of reference books and find which row (counting from those closest to the  front door) contains the telephone books from other cities and towns:   ____________ row .

Walk from the Reference Desk toward the cluster of 20 computers and turn right down the aisle just before the computers to get to the library's Career Collection, a great set of career and job-hunting resources that you should begin to explore early in your time at UNI. There are __________ chairs in the Career room.

Circulating (non-reference) books about psychology most often (but not always) have a call number beginning with BF. Return to the main entrance to check the signs on the monolith-like Directory to find what floor _____ the BF portion of the library stacks is located on. Now head down to the basement level using the main staircase near the front entrance. The first thing you’ll see is another long counter called the _______________________________, with smaller signs showing what services are provided. The right hand area of this counter handles popular _________________________ AND also ______________________.  Only recent issues of  journals/magazines and newspapers that are heavily used are handled at this desk. Others that are in less demand are housed on open shelves nearby (see **below). This same desk is where you come if any of your classes have special readings that the professor has put  “On Reserve” in the library.
**Just across the aisle to the left of the Multiservice Center are the open shelves of recent unbound issues of journals/magazines organized by call number (there are also a couple computers here to access Unistar like before. The number of  printed journals has been decreasing in recent years because UNI is making use of more and more electronic online journals to save money. Whether a particular volume of a journal is available in print format or via one of our online sources is noted in the Unistar entry.

If you pass the unbound journal area and continue down that aisle you will find one of the most popular computer labs on campus. Beyond the computer lab is the smallest and slowest of the library elevators. Turn back towards the stairs.
Underneath the stairs you came down on are open shelves of newspapers in alphabetical order. The first newspaper on display (it starts with an A) is the: ________________________________

If you had turned right when you came down the stairs and walked as far as you could, you would be among the bound volumes of all the journals/magazines the library has. They are organized by call number so once again you have to look up the title of the journal using Unistar as before. You already have two journal call numbers above. Now find the bound volumes of the  Journal of Applied Psychology and note the color of its leather cover: ________________. Do the same with the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and note its color: ________________. By the way, journals volumes from before 1980 are shelved separately, on the big blue movable shelves to the right of the main aisle as you walk back to the journal area.

So your library is a great place not only to find the sources for your papers and projects, not only a quiet place to study without many distractions, but also all sorts of information and resources useful in your daily lives!
