EXCELLENCE IN LIBERAL ARTS CORE TEACHING AWARD CALL FOR NOMINATIONSNEW

Faculty and students are asked to nominate Liberal Arts Core instructors who merit consideration for the Excellence in Liberal Arts Core Teaching Award. Only individuals who have been employed at UNI for at least three years and teach regularly in the LAC are eligible. The emphasis for this award is placed on the overall quality of teaching in the LAC, which is not limited to the classroom. To nominate an instructor, please complete the nomination form and email it to Deirdre Heistad no later than Wednesday, Jan. 18. Heistad’s mail code is 0138.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA TWITTER FEEDNEW

University Relations recently renamed the university Twitter feed to @northerniowa. Current followers don't need to make any changes and the same type of university information and tweets will continue to be shared. Faculty, staff and students who are not currently followers are encouraged to join @northerniowa to learn more about life at UNI.

DIVERSITY - DID YOU KNOW?NEW

UNI is now a campus affiliate with the National Coalition Building Institute. UNI's Campus Coalition Builders initiative currently has 20 volunteer faculty and staff facilitators. Since the spring 2011 semester, more than 150 faculty, staff and students have participated in workshops. There are eight workshops scheduled for this semester.

University Relations (UR) is expanding the university's social media networks and would like to know of faculty and staff who have blogs related to their professional expertise or positions at UNI. UR will consider sharing these blogs on UNI's social media site. Please share your blog site with Liz Conklin.

HARASSMENT PREVENTION SESSIONSNEW

Attorney Jill Jensen-Welch will present several sessions of Harassment Prevention training Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 14 and 15. All faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to attend, especially those in supervisory roles. Several sessions are designated for supervisors only. Pre-registration is required.

IOWA LEGISLATIVE FORUMSNEW

Local Cedar Valley Iowa legislators will once again hold legislative forums throughout the 2012 session at AEA 267 located on Cedar Heights Drive in Cedar Falls. The first forum will be held Friday, Jan. 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will be time for audience questions. Contact Rhonda Greenway, with the Northern Iowa Student Government, or call 273-2650 with questions about the forums.

WELCOMING DIVERSITY WORKSHOP SERIESNEW

The Welcoming Diversity Workshop series is a campus initiative for all students, faculty and staff. Session one, "Building an Inclusive Campus," is an interactive three-hour program offered from 4 to 7 p.m., Jan. 25; from 1 to 4 p.m., Feb. 10; and from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Feb. 23. Registration is now open. The workshops will be led by faculty and staff facilitators from the UNI Campus Coalition Builders. For more information, contact the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.

NEW HELP FOR CAMPUS DRUPAL EDITORSNEW

A new email list has been created for editors of campus Drupal sites. Questions can be sent to the list at any time instead of waiting for a monthly help session. List subscribers will be sent a survey to determine effectiveness of monthly scheduled open office hours. Contact Carolyn Dorr or call 273-2761 for more information.

UNI VOLLEYBALL BANQUETNEW

UNI Volleyball will celebrate the 2011 season at a banquet at noon, Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike. The cost is $20 per person. RSVP to Michelle Coulter or call 273-3176 by Tuesday, Jan. 24.

SIGN UP FOR RELAY FOR LIFENEW

Register an eight to 15 member team for Relay For Life Jan. 16 through 20, for $5 per member. UNI's Relay For Life will take place on April 13 and 14, in the McLeod Center. All participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $50 Barmuda gift card. For more information, email Emily Droessler.

OSHA BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN TRAINING OFFERED

This 50-minute training is required for all students completing field experiences in any pre-K through 12 school setting. The training is free and open to anyone. The last session offered is at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, in 244/245 SEC. No registration is required. Sponsored by the Office of Teacher Education.

RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY FUND

The Intercollegiate Academics Fund (IAF) provides funds to cover research and creative activity expenses for students. Upcoming application deadlines include Feb. 2 and March 1. Students who have been invited to perform, compete or present their research at a conference or intercollegiate event may also apply for travel funds through IAF.

Interested in learning more about different cultures? Do you want to meet people from other countries? The Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) is seeking volunteers to match with international students. Partners meet one hour weekly to speak English with an international student. MASSAGE THERAPY OUTREACH SERVICES ON CAMPUS

Wellness and Recreation Services is offering massage therapy services by a licensed massage therapist in various campus locations. Chair massages are 10 minutes for $10 on a drop-in basis, paid by u-bill charge or payroll deduction. These are offered Mondays, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the WRC Lobby;  Tuesdays, in the SEC Lobby; most Wednesdays in Maucker Union; Thursdays in the Piazza Dining Center; and Fridays in the Gilchrist Lobby, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, contact Kathy Green at 273-6921.
