UNI Online is distributed on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Submitted items must be sponsored by a UNI department, program or organization. No commercial or personal announcements are allowed. Announcements must have news, not opinion content. News items may be submitted via the UNI Online Submission Form.

MAJOR OUTAGE TO THE STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEMSNEW

The following SIS applications are going to be unavailable for system maintenance from 6 to 8 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 11: the SIS CRM application, MyUNIverse portal and SIS Campus Solutions System. This includes the online application for admission and the schedule of classes.

ANNOUNCING THE PUBLICATION OF VOLUME 7 OF UNIVERSITASNEW

Volume seven of UNIversitas is now published online. Arts and Sciences are treated in one forum, while a third way to appreciate faculty excellence is explored in the other. Other features include: treatment of the value of tenure, the generation of original musical drama, global French experiences and additive manufacturing.

SLIP/TRIP/FALL INJURIES

Slips, trips and falls account for a significant number of injuries reported to the university. With fluctuating temperatures, we may experience a freeze/thaw cycle that can lead to injury. Be aware that surfaces that are wet during the daytime hours may be iced over in the late evening or early morning hours. Please exercise caution when walking on paved surfaces during these hours.

JOB SHADOWING EVENT FEB. 23NEW

The UNI Educational Talent Search Program (ETS) needs help in providing a job shadowing experience for students from George Washington Carver Academy in Waterloo. Students will be paired with faculty and staff on campus from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m., Feb. 23. The students will ask questions about your position, responsibilities and education. Faculty and staff can join their students for lunch (at no charge) if your schedule allows. If interested in hosting, email Ruthie Stigler by Friday, Feb. 17. FACULTY DEVELOPMENT: 'HELP! MY STUDENTS WON’T TALK IN CLASS'NEW

Learn strategies for promoting class discussions that facilitate learning from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 13, in the Oak Room, MAU. The facilitator will be Susan Hill. Bring your lunch; refreshments will be provided. 

DONATE CHILDREN'S BOOKS AT THE FEB. 11 UNI MEN'S BASKETBALL GAMENEW

Support the Cedar Valley United Way's "I Can Read" project by bringing a new or gently used children's book to the UNI vs. Illinois men's basketball game at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, in the McLeod Center. The "I Can Read" project supports literacy efforts with local youth. The UNI campus community and its partners donated 765 books to "I Can Read" earlier this fall. Help with UNI's final push to collect books for kids this weekend. If you would like to donate, but can't make it to the game, email Jess Betts or call 273-2761 to arrange for a pick up.

SAE BLOOD DRIVENEW

The American Red Cross and Sigma Alpha Epsilon will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the Commons Ballroom. For an appointment, sign up in Maucker Union between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Feb. 8, 9 or 13 or call 1-800-RED CROSS. Come save a life this Valentine's Day.

UNI HUNGER GAMESNEW

You asked, and we listened. Rod Library's UNI Hunger Games, to be held from 7 p.m. to midnight, Friday, March 2,  in the Rod Library, are now open to UNI faculty and staff to participate as long as there is at least one UNI student on the team. Faculty and staff may also volunteer to help run the games that evening. For more information, visit the UNI Hunger Games webpage.

FREE TAX HELP AT UNI

UNI accounting students will provide free income tax assistance from 5 to 7 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 6 through April 11, in 223 CBB. Federal and Iowa tax returns are electronically prepared and e-filed for free. No appointment is necessary. Please arrive at 5 p.m. to allow students sufficient time to complete the returns. PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL TRAINING

HRS will provide Performance Appraisal Training for supervisors who are new to conducting performance appraisals or who want to enhance their overall performance management skills. Participants will learn how to approach and follow through with the performance appraisal and the entire performance management process. OPPORTUNITY TO TEACH UNI STUDENTS ABROAD

Every year, the UNI Study Abroad Center sends between 300 and 400 UNI students on short-term programs led by UNI faculty and staff. If you are interested in becoming a course leader and developing a course to lead abroad, consider attending the live webinar information sessions from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8 or Friday, Feb. 10. UNI-CUE BLOOD DRIVE

Down the street and across the country, there are patients in need of lifesaving blood. Help patients in need by donating blood through the American Red Cross at the UNI-CUE Blood Drive from 1 to 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24, at 800 Sycamore St., Waterloo.
