Scholarship for juniors and graduating seniors

During the current academic year, two McElroy Fellowships will be available to graduates of ten accredited liberal arts colleges in Northeast Iowa, namely: Clarke College, Loras College, University of Dubuque, Luther College, Upper Iowa University, Wartburg College, Coe College, Cornell College, Mount Mercy College, and the University of Northern Iowa. Last year, UNI Economics major Nicholas J. Sly was one of the awardees.

The purpose of the McElroy Fellowship Program is to encourage persons of accomplishment, intelligence, integrity, and leadership ability to pursue challenging academic careers. In the selection process, considerable weight will be given to an applicant or candidate’s academic record and to extra-curricular activities that give evidence of initiative, commitment and discipline. A major objective of the Fellowships is to provide financial assistance to candidates with outstanding graduate school potential.

To be eligible, a potential grantee or candidate must be a graduate or a graduating senior of a liberal arts program at one of the ten colleges and intend to pursue graduate study toward a Doctor of Philosophy Degree at an accredited university of his or her choice. An initial stipend of $10,000 may be renewed for two additional years (a total of $30,000), if the grantee provides evidence of satisfactory progress toward the doctorate.

Each candidate must submit his/her application in duplicate to: Dr. Susan Koch, ATTN: McElroy Selection Committee, Graduate College, by the end of the day January 31, 2004. Applications with supporting material will be reviewed by the University Awards Competition Coordinating Committee. One applicant will be selected by the Committee to receive an institutional recommendation from President Koob. That applicant’s materials will be forwarded to the Trust Office for final selection by the McElroy Fellowship Selection Committee. The selection process will include a personal interview with the committee at the McElroy Trust Office in Waterloo. Two of the final ten candidates will be selected as McElroy Fellows. Announcement of the awards will be made within two weeks after the interview.
