:

PURPOSE FOR THESE TWO SESSIONS
UNI began an American Democracy Project ADP) last year as part of the national ADP initiative
of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. UNI’s committee is co-chaired
by Melissa Heston and Mitchell Strauss.
UNI’s ADP is sponsoring this program for a couple of reasons. One is that an educated citizenry
is a foundation of a democracy, and research shows that students who began reading newspapers in college were more likely to do so as adults. A second one is that, as the Times states, newspapers are “the frontline of history,” and courses are enriched by having students read current material related to the theory and concepts they are learning in their classes.
