ARE YOU INTERESTED IN PURSUING A Ph.D.?
If so, the McNair Scholars Program may be for you!

The University of Northern Iowa’s McNair Scholars Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to encourage and to help dozens of UNI juniors and seniors prepare themselves for doctoral-level study. The McNair Scholars Program encourages first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds to enter Ph.D.-granting programs and to consider careers in college teaching.

McNair Scholar’s Benefits:

Opportunity to engage in 10 weeks of summer research under the guidance of faculty mentors.
Receive a stipend of as much as $2,800 during your successful summer research.
Participate in an 8-week GRE (Graduate Record Examination) preparation course.
Senior scholars may receive funding to visit selected graduate schools.
Take part in workshops that offer writing assistance, focusing on enhancing the quality of proposals and essential portions of the graduate school application, such as the letter of intent and the curriculum vitae.
Participate in professional conferences and present your research to your professional colleagues and peers at the national level.
Attend a pre-research seminar held by active research faculty members for an overview of the research process from selecting a research mentor, through project design, to creating a presentation.

Eligibility Requirements:

Full time University of Northern Iowa students with a minimum UNI cumulative GPA of 2.80
U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States
Both a low-income (as defined by the U.S. Department of Education) AND a first generation college student; OR a member of a group that is underrepresented in graduate education (African American, Hispanic, Native American or Alaskan Native, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education).
A serious, stated interest in pursuing graduate study leading to the Ph.D.
