Attention graduate students. The Cedar Valley Sustainability and Environmental Educators are bringing a new event to the UNI campus Thursday, May 26, for 1,300 ninth grade students from Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Live Like a Student courses are designed to help students budget money, live within their means and understand how financial decisions can affect the future. The course is three weeks long (six sessions). Classes are non-credit and offered at three different times during the semester. The associate provost for International Programs (APIP) search committee invites all members of the campus community to attend three open forums where the APIP candidates will give a short presentation on their vision for internationalizing UNI followed by a question/answer session. An electronic evaluation form has been set up for each candidate. The forms will be available at https://access.uni.edu/cgi-bin/surveys/takeSurvey.cgi. Every Monday starting Aug. 30, go to the Memorial Gardens east of Maucker Union from 7 to 9 p.m., for the music series "The Four Letter Word: Jazz." The bash will feature complimentary lunch and President Allen's kickoff to the start of the academic year. School supplies will be collected for the Back to School Project, which served 2,300 students in Black Hawk County last year. To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, HLSU and the CME will host a music festival, featuring bands and artists, infusing Latin flavor with American rock influences from 6 to 10 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, on Maucker Union East Lawn. This event is free, with food and drink provided.

Free Capoeira classes are offered to students and faculty at 9 p.m., every Wednesday in WRC 176. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that was developed during colonial Brazil by African slaves. UNI School of Music faculty artist Randy Grabowski will present a trumpet recital with faculty pianist Dmitri Vorobiev, featuring a wide range of compositions written specifically for the trumpet. The U.S. Army Blues Band will present a concert at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Bengtson Auditorium, RSL. After beginning informally in 1970, The Army Blues became an official part of the United States Army Band "Pershing’s Own" in 1972. Over the years it has evolved into the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Army. This event is free and open to the public.
UNI School of Music faculty artist Hunter Capoccioni will coordinate a weekend long double-bass festival including recital performances by guest artist Michael J. Cameron, professor of double bass at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and Mark Urness, professor of music at Lawrence University. Performances will be held at 5:30 p.m. (Cameron) and 8 p.m. (Urness) on Saturday, Sept. 18, and master classes will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19.
