School of Applied Human Sciences announced

The Department of Design, Textiles, Gerontology and Family Studies, along with the Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs that were formerly in the College of Education, now constitute the School of Applied Human Sciences in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. This newly named unit was approved during the August meeting of the Iowa Board of Regents. For more information, contact Howard Barnes, director of the School of Applied Human Sciences, at 3-2555.

New CSBS website launched

INTERIM HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE APPOINTED

Donna Hoffman, associate professor of political science, has been appointed interim head of the Department of Political Science. Hoffman replaces Michael Licari who has been appointed associate provost for academic affairs and graduate dean.

NEW ASSOCIATE PROVOST AND DEAN OF GRADUATE COLLEGE NAMED

UNI Executive Vice President and Provost Gloria Gibson named Michael J. Licari associate provost for academic affairs and dean of the Graduate College. GRADUATE STUDENTS' INFORMATIONAL MEETING

A Graduate Students' Informational Meeting (formerly New Graduate Student Orientation) will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, in the Maucker Union Old Central Ballroom. OSHA BLOODBOURNE PATHOGEN TRAINING

This 30-minute training is required for all students completing field experiences in any pre-K through 12 school setting. The training is free and open to anyone. Three sessions will be offered: 4 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 31; 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1; or 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2. All sessions will be held in SEC 244/245. No registration is required. MANDATORY REPORTERS OF CHILD ABUSE TRAINING

A training session for Mandatory Reporters of Child Abuse will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3, in SEC 247. ALL-RACHMANINOFF RECITAL

Pianist Sean Botkin, School of Music, will present an all-Rachmaninoff recital with guest artists and members of the Maia Quartet, including Tricia Park, violin, and Hannah Holman, cello. The concert will be held at 8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 30, in Davis Hall, GBPAC, and will feature a selection of Rachmaninoff Preludes from Op. 23 and Op. 32 and Trio Elégiaque, Op. 9 for violin, cello and piano. This event is free and open to the public.

GUEST OBOE RECITAL

Guest artist Dane Philipsen, oboe, will present a recital with faculty pianist Robin Guy at 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3, in Davis Hall, GBPAC. Philipsen, a UNI alumnus played and performed with top ensembles in the Cedar Valley and after completing an M.M. at Arizona State University, played with the Atlanta Opera, Chicago Civic Orchestra and the New World Symphony. This event is free and open to the public.

ALUMNI ART EXHIBITION

An invitational art exhibition, "Never Chaste," will be presented Aug. 23 through Sept. 19. This is the first in a yearlong series of events featuring UNI Department of Art alumni titled "Time is Ripe." Exhibition participants include Jensen Barnes (B.F.A. IMMIGRATION DEBATE AND INFORMATIONAL MEETING ABOUT POLICY DEBATE AT UNI

The UNI Speech and Debate Team will host an audience debate from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, in Lang 040 (Interp Theatre). The fall 2010 course Applied Writing (620:105g) focuses on workplace skills in communicating specialized information. The fall course Introduction to Professional Writing (620:077) offers strategies and tools to design communications for maximum impact and effectiveness. The fall course in Professional Editing (620:107g) provides "real life" experience in editing creative, scholarly and workplace texts in a professional capacity. Prerequisites can be waived.
