My UNI Weekend is a digest of weekend (Thursday - Sunday) entertainment and recreation opportunities at UNI, mailed on Thursday mornings during fall and spring semesters. Submission deadline is noon, Wednesday. Submissions will be rejected if sponsorship by a university department, program or organization is not clear.

FUNDRAISER FOR 'EXTREME MAKEOVER' IOWA FAMILY

The “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” design team, Larson Construction and thousands of volunteers are building a new home this week for an Iowa family. Show designers and rock icon, reality TV star and philanthropist Bret Michaels, will be part of an event to raise funds to pay off the Gibbs’ family mortgage Thursday, Oct. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at National Cattle Congress, 257 Ansborough Ave., Waterloo, on the outdoor dirt track. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for bleacher seating or $100 for the VIP section. Scheduled events include a truck sled-pulling exhibition, a lawn mower-racing exhibition and a demolition derby. Following the event, a local band will perform.

2ND ANNUAL HOMECOMING TRADITIONS CHALLENGE AMAZING RACE

Teams of five will compete in a race challenge across campus. Teams will receive picture clues pointing them in the right direction. When teams make it to the correct destination, they will do a challenge and then take a group picture to complete the challenge. Prizes will be awarded to teams that finish in the top three places, as well as best dressed. STRAYER-WOOD THEATRE PRESENTS 'GUERNICA'

The Spanish town of Guernica was home to a tragic event that inspired Picasso to create a masterpiece. "Guernica," the play, follows Eric, a young aspiring artist who meets a man claiming to be Pablo Picasso, offering him a seductive opportunity: create an even grander canvas. This play explores the creative process and the madness of war while the "Guernica." The Strayer-Wood Theatre presents the Midwest premiere of this award-winning play at 7:30 p.m., in the Bertha Martin Theatre.

UNI SYMPHONIC BAND & JAZZ PANTHERS

The Symphonic Band will offer a shared concert with the UNI Jazz Panthers at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Great Hall, GBPAC. This event is free and open to the public.

SPOTLIGHT SERIES CONCERT: WIND SYMPHONY & JAZZ BAND ONE

PEP RALLY, CRY FINALS AND FIREWORKS

The pep rally, Panther Pride Cry Findals and fireworks will take place at 9 p.m., on the South Lawn at the McLeod Center. (Rain site is inside the McLeod Center.) Show your Panther Pride with the UNI spirit squads, TC, pep band and the football team.

UNI PROUD HOSTS: S'MORES AT THE WESLEY FOUNDATION

You're invited to join UNI Proud members for s'mores and fun at the Wesley Foundation at 10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7. It's an opportunity to make friends and celebrate Homecoming.

14TH ANNUAL PANTHER PACERS HOMECOMING 5K RUN/WALK

Dust off those running shoes and come celebrate UNI Homecoming with the 14th Annual Panther Pacers Homecoming 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Intramural Fields west of the UNI-Dome. CEDAR FALLS FARMERS MARKET

Every Saturday through October the Cedar Falls Farmers Market is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon, on west Third Street between Franklin and Clay streets (next to Overman Park - downtown). Fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, plants, flowers, crafts, jewelry, popcorn, eggs and more are available. PANTHER FESTIVAL

A family friendly event featuring UNI student organizations, inflatable games, food and fun will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, on the corner of College and W. 23rd streets. (Rain site is Maucker Union.) 

PROJECT RUNWAY: DOME EDITION LIVE EVENT!

See models strut down the runway in designs created by UNI students at the 2011 Panther Festival. Competition participants had two weeks to create a garment from a Panther athletic jersey and a prom dress. These designs will be judged during the Panther festival at noon, Saturday, Oct. 8, in front of Lang Hall. UNI alumni who work in the fashion industry and special guest judge, Pat Allen, will critique these original designs.
