My UNI Weekend is a digest of weekend (Thursday - Sunday) entertainment and recreation opportunities at UNI, mailed on Thursday mornings during fall and spring semesters. Submission deadline is noon, Wednesday. Submissions will be rejected if sponsorship by a university department, program or organization is not clear.

THURSDAY EVENTS

TRAVELING EXHIBIT: 'BESA: ALBANIAN MUSLIMS WHO SAVED JEWS DURING WORLD WAR II'

The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education is co-sponsoring a traveling exhibit, “BESA: Albanian Muslims Who Saved Jews During World War II, Photographs by Norman Gershman.” The exhibit features 41 photographic images with accompanying text. It was developed by the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion Museum in New York City. The exhibit is at The Grout Museum in Waterloo. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

EAT LOCAL AT THE PIAZZA

Come to the Piazza from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19, for a meal that has many locally purchased items. Featured purchased products are from the Gilbertville Locker, Daley's Shamrock Acres, Hilcrest Farms, Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy, Anything But Green Gardens, Rolling Hills Farms and more.

CME SEVEN BOOK CLUB

The Center for Multicultural Education (CME) will discuss "Multicultural American Literature: Comparative Black, Native, Latino/a, and Asian American Fictions" by A. Robert Lee from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in the CME.

'WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES'

There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experiences until you've walked a mile in their shoes." Join Greek Life at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19, at the Alumni House (next to 23rd Street across from University Book & Supply) to commemorate the experiences of women all over the world. LAST RHO EPSILON MEETING

Rho Epsilon will meet at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in 131 CBB. The presenter will be Wells Fargo Financial- Lending from Des Moines. Learn about the company and the opportunities they have available for internships and full-time employment. This is the last meeting of the year. PROMETHEAN PARTY

Learn the basics of using Promethean interactive whiteboards at the Promethean Party from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in 423 SEC. Play while you learn. Socialize and learn about a great piece of educational technology. Refreshments provided.

UNI EARTH WEEK FILM SCREENING 'WALL-E'

UNI's Campus Activities Board (CAB) and the Recycling & Reuse Technology Transfer Center (RRTTC) will host a free showing of the movie "Wall-E" at 7 and 9:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in the Ballroom, MAU, in honor of Earth Week. Snacks are provided but be sure to BYOC (bring your own cup) for free beverages.

2012 HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

The Sixth Annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 19, at the Grout Museum of Science & History, 503 South Street, Waterloo and will feature a presentation by Inge Auerbacher, survivor of Terezín (Theresienstadt) Concentration Camp. Auerbacher is the author of several books on the Holocaust, including the story of her survival, I Am a Star; and the recipient of numerous awards for her books and work teaching tolerance and human rights.  The ceremony will include a performance of music, the lighting of candles in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides. The event is free and open to the public.

NISEA MOCK INTERVIEWS FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS

Northern Iowa State Education Association will host mock interviews at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in 320 SEC, with interviews starting every half hour. Interviews will be conducted by local administrators and UNI faculty members. At the conclusion of the interview, you will receive feedback on the areas where improvement can be made. Participants should dress in business casual attire. Resumes are welcome, but not necessary. To sign up for an interview, email Sheila with your name and major.

UNI SYMPHONIC BAND

The UNI Symphonic Band will offer a spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in the Great Hall, GBPAC. This event is free and open to the public.

FACULTY ARTIST RECITAL: HALGEDAHL-BOTKIN DUO

This spring recital will feature faculty artists Frederick Halgedahl, violin, and Sean Botkin, piano at 8 p.m., Thursday, April 19, in Davis Hall, GBPAC. Repertoire to be announced. This event is free and open to the public.

UNI-SHRM BOWLING FUNDRAISER

Join UNI's Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) for a bowling fundraiser at 9 p.m., Thursday, April 19, at Maple Lanes. It's QuaterMania night and tickets are $6 for shoes and 2.5 hours of bowling. To buy a ticket beforehand, speak to a UNI-SHRM member or purchase tickets at the door. FREE OUTDOOR OBSERVATORY SHOW

There will be a free outdoor observatory show at 9 p.m, Thursday.  Meet just outside 137 MSH before the start time so you can be directed to the roof.

UNI FUN NIGHT - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Multicultural Teaching Alliance (MTA) will host UNI Fun Night from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, April 20, at the WRC. MTA hosts this annual event for the Big Brothers Big Sisters' children who are on the waiting list for a mentor. Volunteers are needed to assist in playing games and activities with the children. THE MIDTOWN MEN

The group’s jump-to-your-feet show features top hits from a who’s who of the ‘60s including The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, The Jackson 5 and The Four Seasons, whose story they brought to life every night as stars in the original cast of "Jersey Boys." The Midtown Men are Tony Award Winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony nominee J. Robert Spencer. The show will be from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., Friday, April 20, in the GBPAC. SPOTLIGHT SERIES: UNI OPERA SCENES PERFORMANCE

UNI School of Music professor Sandra Walden and vocal coach Korey Barrett will direct an opera scenes performance featuring current opera students. The show will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 20, in Bengtson Auditorium, RSL. Purchase tickets online, or call 273-4TIX.

NEWS TALK: ADAPTING CITIES TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Gowri Betrabet Gulwadi, interior design, will speak on "Adapting Cities to Climate Change," from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 21, at the University Book & Supply.

UNI TAE KWON-DO CLUB PROMOTIONAL TESTING AND BLACK BELT DEMO

The UNI Tae Kwon-Do Club will hold its 255th promotional testing and black belt demonstration. This event is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 21, in 176 WRC. During testing and demonstration you will see forms, self-defense, sparring and board breaking. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and meet some of the certified instructors before or after testing. 

SOFTBALL

UNI Softball will take on Missouri State at noon and 2 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at the Robinson-Dresser Fields.

FILM: 'DAUGHTER FROM DANANG'

"Daughter from Danang," will be shown from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 21, at the University Museum. This film is presented in conjunction with the exhibit "RACE: Are We So Different?" on display at the University Museum through June 9. Run time 83 minutes.

NORTHERN IOWA WIND SYMPHONY ALUMNI CONCERT

The Northern Iowa Wind Symphony will offer a spring concert featuring returning Wind Symphony alumni performers at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 21, in the Great Hall, GBPAC. This event is free and open to the public.

SUNDAY EVENTS

EARTH DAY SERVICE PROJECT

On April 22, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day 2012. Become part of the movement here at UNI by participating in Earth Day activities, which include a campus clean up, planting flowers in campus planters, projects at Hartman Reserve, the Cedar Falls Community Garden and the Center for Energy and Environmental Education. Participants will receive a T-shirt, transportation to sites and a healthy snack. For more information, call the Student Involvement & Activities Center at 273-2683.

SOFTBALL

UNI Softball will take on Missouri State at noon, Sunday, April 22, at the Robinson-Dresser Fields.

PICNIC PALOOZA

Relax before finals at Picnic Palooza, from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 22, at Lawther Field. There will be free food (while supplies last) and lawn games. There will also be a blanket drive for the Salvation Army; bring a blanket for the picnic and then donate to a great cause. In the event of rain, the event will be held in the West Gym.

SORORITY HOUSE TOURS

This program allows women to get a glimpse of what sorority life is like at UNI. Chapter houses will be open for tours with informal sessions at each house from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 22. Meet in the Old Central Ballroom, MAU and recruitment guides from Rho Gamma will lead participants to each house.
