My UNI Weekend is a digest of weekend (Thursday - Sunday) entertainment and recreation opportunities at UNI, mailed on Thursday mornings during fall and spring semesters. Submission deadline is noon, Wednesday. Submissions will be rejected if sponsorship by a university department, program or organization is not clear.

THURSDAY EVENTS

'IN MY SHOES' EVENT

Curious about disability? Experience disability firsthand from noon to 4 p.m., in the Maucker Union State College Room. Individuals will be led through disability simulations such as blindness, deafness and use of a wheelchair. This will be a fun and educational experience. Educate yourself about the largest minority group in the nation.

UNI ENTREPRENEURS MEETING

UNI Entrepreneurs (UNI-E) group will meet at 4:45 p.m., at the BCS to carpool to a meeting in downtown Waterloo. The meeting is open to all CEO and SIFE members and students interested in entrepreneurship. For more information, call 273-JPEC or e-mail laurie.watje@uni.edu.

IOWA IMMIGRATION SPEAKER-MARK GREY

Mark Grey, anthropology, and a leading expert on immigration, will lead an open forum/discussion with the Iowa Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration and Hispanic Latino Student Union at 7:30 p.m., in the Hemisphere Lounge, Maucker Union. The forum will analyze the effects of immigration in Iowa.

TRUMPET RECITAL

Visiting artist Bruce Barrie, trumpet, will offer a recital with faculty artist Polina Khatsko, piano, at 7:30 p.m., in Bengtson Auditorium, RSL. Free and open to the public.

UNI GALLERY OF ART

See "The Untraceable Present: Paintings by Duane Slick," an alumnus of the UNI Department of Art. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.

TALK BACK WITH LARAMIE PROJECT COMPANY MEMBERS

Join members of the Tectonic Theatre Project for a post-performance discussion and learn about the process of interviewing and how to craft material into a stage play, from 3 to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 15, at the CME.

SATURDAY EVENTS

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

Join the 2010 UNI Make A Difference Day at Big Woods Lake in Cedar Falls. Help with the development of a new portion of the park. Sign up as an individual or with a group. Check-in begins at 9 a.m., in Maucker Union. The event will last until approximately 1 p.m. Lunch, a T-shirt, water and gloves (if necessary) will be provided. RUN FOR THE PRESERVES

Run a cross-country 5K to support and promote the UNI Prairie Preserves at 10 a.m. The race will start at the Prairie Preserves entrance near the UNI Credit Union on West 29th Street, Cedar Falls. Registration fee on race day is $10.

VOTER- PALOOZA

The event is from 8 p.m. to  2 a.m.  Come enjoy the free show by the Pork Tornadoes and The Diz Diz, then vote in a mock election for governor, register to vote, learn more about the 2010 candidates and fill out absentee ballots.  All UNI students (18+, with a college ID) are welcome. 

CAMP ADVENTURE CHILD AND YOUTH SERVICES

Camp Adventure Child & Youth Services allows students to work with children on U.S. Military bases all over the world. UNI GALLERY OF ART 'NEVER CHASTE'

This is the first in a yearlong series of events featuring UNI Department of Art alumni. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Free.

UNI CONCERT CHORALE

The UNI Concert Chorale will offer a concert at 2 p.m., in the Great Hall, GBPAC. Free and open to the public.

STRESSED OUT ABOUT MIDTERMS?

Academic Coaches are in the Rod Library on Sunday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m., on the second floor near the art display. Look for The A-Team sunsign.
