PREPARING FOR UNI UP CLOSE

On Feb. 20 and 27 hundreds of high-school seniors and their parents will descend on campus for UNI Up Close. These students have already been admitted to UNI for fall 2009, and this is one more opportunity for us to help them learn more about UNI and encourage them to enroll here this fall.

Market research findings from a 2008 study by Noel-Levitz for UNI show that quality of academic programs; faculty who are excellent teachers; quality of academic resources and facilities; and financial aid or scholarship assistance are important to students and parents alike.

Many parents and other family members will travel to UNI with potential students. Remember: 98 percent of parents are moderately or very involved in students' college choice.

Parents want their students to:

1. Get a good job after college.

2. Become well educated in their specific major of study.

3. Become a mature adult while in college.

How does UNI help its graduates accomplish all three?

Think about your role as a member of the university community and how you can contribute to the positive experience of all prospective students, parents and campus guests you encounter every day at UNI. We offer the following to help you prepare:

HOW WOULD YOU RESPOND IF A STUDENT OR PARENT ASKED YOU:

- What makes your program's curriculum strong or unique?

- How do you develop students' skills and knowledge?

- What kind of faculty do students have access to?

- What opportunities are available for research, fieldwork, independent study, travel or other experiences outside the classroom?

- Are there special facilities or resources available to students? Campus clubs or organizations associated with the study area?

- What employment or graduate/professional school opportunities are available for graduates? - What are recent graduates doing?

PREPARE IN ADVANCE AND BE READY TO:

- Discuss what skills and knowledge students will gain from your department and program and what sets UNI apart.

- Talk about employment rates and opportunities for graduates from your department/program. Use examples of recent graduates.

- Talk about faculty teaching style and student experiences in and out of the classroom as they relate to your department/program.

- Discuss the academic resources available to students and facilities they have access to that will help them as a student at UNI.

- Talk about how UNI graduates "learn to understand and appreciate diverse people and viewpoints" rather than talking about UNI providing a "liberal arts education,"

- Address financial aid and scholarship assistance in your department/program.

Each one of us in the UNI community has the potential to influence a prospective student's decision to attend our university. The staff in the Office of Admissions thanks you in advance for your assistance in bringing in future students.
