The Board of Regents asked President Allen and the University of Northern Iowa to lead a Board of Regents Mathematics and Science Education Collaborative Initiative in close partnership with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

The initiative is a response to the shortcomings in math and science education at the state and national level. These issues challenge our status as an educational leader and global economic competitor.

The initiative has three goals:

1) To improve mathematics and science performance of Iowa students.
2) To prepare high-quality mathematics and science teachers for Iowa's schools.
3) To promote statewide collaboration and coordination.

A Regents Mathematics and Science Education Steering Committee has been named. The committee includes faculty and administrators from the three regent universities.

The primary purpose of the steering committee is to provide oversight in coordinating an inventory of math and science education related initiatives; identifying and prioritizing potential collaborative projects or activities; and investigating ways to implement innovative projects and activities.

The committee will be facilitated by Jeff Weld, associate professor, University of Northern Iowa Department of Biology. Other members include Jill Uhlenberg, assistant professor, University of Northern Iowa Department of Curriculum & Instruction; Joel Haack, dean, University of Northern Iowa College of Natural Sciences; Cheryl Achterberg, dean, Iowa State University College of Human Sciences; Loren Zachary, professor and assistant dean, Iowa State University College of Engineering; James Colbert, associate professor, Iowa State University Department of Ecology, Evolution & Organismal Biology; Brian Hand, professor, University of Iowa Department of Teaching and Learning; Walter Seaman, associate professor, University of Iowa Department of Mathematics; Norbert Pienta, associate professor, University of Iowa Department of Chemistry and director, University of Iowa Center for Teaching.
